All Time Low

If you attended Soundwave festival in 2008, you may have been lucky enough to witness the entertaining show by four young gents from Maryland, USA known as All Time Low. Taking their name from the New Found Glory song Head On Collision, its obvious where their influences lie, but front man and guitarist Alex Gaskarth is quick to explain that while their sound may be well-documented, there is something special about this particular quartet. Not only have they been around for eight years but have retained the original line up something that is not too common these days.

  Grizzly Bear
Veckatimest
Warp/ Inertia

Grizzly Bears Yellow House from 2006 was an album steeped in indie conventions. It utilised obtuse instrumentation, ethereal reverb-soaked vocals and boutique production values, but these mainstays of the genre were used to create an immensely satisfying, atmospheric slow-burner. From a careless first listen, Veckatimest might seem to be a more straightforward affair; the instrumentation is for the most part pared-down, using mainly guitar, bass, drums, keys and vocals, with effects kept to a minimum. But this is deceptive. Every song is brilliantly and intricately constructed, harnessing the bands (many) strengths to build an album that will be a genuine contender for the best this year.
