DeAnne Smith
Ballsy

Tuxedo Cat: Attic Season closed

Canadian based comedian DeAnne Smith tells us that she lacks confidence. As far as those in the audience can see, that much is not true because if she does she certainly doesn't show it. A few short minutes after she sent someone out of the room because his "cell phone" went off (he had to go back out onto the street, come back and recommence his part in the audience again), her phone rang from backstage. More humiliated than annoyed, Smith decides to take the call before handing it over to someone in the crowd to take any further messages.

During her performance, Smith proves herself to not only be cutely forgiving towards minor mishaps but also deftly able to handle to any perpetrators. And it seems that having to deal with unexpected situations is a part of Smith's life as she begins the show by telling of an unsavoury below waist incident at a recent artists party, and later of a time where she enviously witnessed a public urination. Proudly gay and from a well meaning racist family, Smith relishes in the many surprises life throws at her; whether it be an uncomfortable visit to the acupuncturist or having her parents meet former ethnic girlfriends and the lighthearted gags, often complete with not always so obvious puns just naturally follow.

Introducing a ukulele into her act, we were treated to a couple of songs about mortality and the experience of lesbian sex. Again, with that same surefooted, cheer-filled delivery as her stand up. Mark her down for next year because no doubt she'll be back and even more confident. And that's a scary thought.
