Dave Bloustein
The Social Contract
Rhino Room
Season closed
Quick question: if you're a comedian and you're being sued for not being funny, would you then take to the stage to tell everyone about it? Especially when you're out there under the pretense of being a comedian - i.e. someone who is meant to be 'funny'.
True story and the year was 2007; 'Good News Week' staff writer Dave Bloustein received an offer to perform at a high school formal held on a Sydney Harbour cruise boat, a gig the fully reluctant but then struggling 'comedian' couldn't refuse. Needless to say a wrong crowd at a wrong type of event soon spelt disaster, leaving Sam the booking agent not only wanting to renege upon any agreed money, he's now also chasing damages and so the saga began. Changing a few identifying details in order to prevent further litigation, Bloustein is a natural, likable and "chillaxed" storyteller; and allowing plenty of time to set up both sides of said argument, he smoothly lays out his defense by taking us through the case from initial contact, to the night in question and right up to court, leaving us the audience laughing all the way to the jury room.
The verdict? Not guilty on the grounds that this show is absolute comedy gold, although I doubt very much that Sam will find it funny.
