Adam Vincent
Adamland
The Tuxedo Cat - Until Sun 8 March
This is Fringe show number three for ex-Adelaide comedian Adam Vincent. And the question is, has he been toying with us all this time? I love this guy, but before now I've always found it hard to actually recommend him to anyone, either in print or on the street. Sure, I've always found him humorously amusing, but I also consider him a friend so does being biased count?
Methinks not. Last year I genuinely did laugh all the way through, but I must admit some of that was out of sympathy and the rest was morbid fascination. He could not find his place; and while I, together with the rest of his audience lapped it up and went along his awkward presentation, for what it was worth, we all got our money's worth.
That brings us to 'Adamland', a place where Adam goes to be alone with his thoughts. A place I urge all to visit because here's a place that's still so scarily insecure and no less neurotic. And here's the hook for all you comedy lovers who, for want of a better word, "enjoy" their laughs at other people's self-doubting expense; he is so darkly funny and often too honest that one still wonders whether or not if laughing is the comfortable thing to do.
Vincent has now well and truly stepped off that precipice that's been holding him back and while he still hits a few rocks as he falls, half the fun is waiting to see how he lands. Highly recommended!
