After collecting two spots in the Triple J Hot 100, Aussie hip-hop duo Muph And Plutonic are doing a lengthy tour around the country, including a stop in Adelaide at the Adelaide Uni Bar on Saturday 28 March. Introspective but not gloomy, party-conscious but intelligent, the duo are one of Australia's strongest hip-hop talents. They're bringing Horrorshow with them, who for my money, are Australia's strongest hip-hop talent.
Obese Records rapper Drapht was also pretty successful on the Hot 100, with his track Jimmy Recard coming in the top 10. Coincidentally, he's also touring next month, bringing Western Australian group Downsyde with him. Known for his high-pitched voice and melodic, sometimes almost sung raps, Drapht's 2008 album 'Brothers Grimm' stood out as something a bit different in Aussie hip-hop. It's all happening Friday 27 March, at Fowler's Live.
One of New Zealand's premier dub/ reggae acts, Fat Freddy's Drop, will be stopping by to play a hazy set of warm bass music on March 20. HQ's the spot. There's never enough live reggae or dub in Adelaide, so this is a good opportunity to catch something that probably won't happen that often.
After recently bringing Shimon to Adelaide, Lightmare Drum & Bass are back, with Worlds Collide 2, an 8-hour night of breaks and bass mayhem at Live On Light Square on Friday 27 February. Entirely comprised of battle sets, the night's set to feature Mark 7 (5158 Records) VS Miss Ledz, Troub9L VS Moment, Rolex VS Zypha, Shortcut VS Pirate Po, Pulse VS Metalman, Force 10 VS Lavish and MC G-Swift. Big! Not only that, but there are guests, live visuals by Digital Prophets and loads of drinks specials. Massive!
DJ TR!P is presenting a night of vintage arcade and Nintendo games, chip-tunes, game soundtracks and more. Ultracade is entirely themed around videogames, and is taking place at La Boheme on Saturday 14 March. Come and play some arcade games while listening to your favourite video game theme songs.
Also on the DJ TR!P tip, Basement Beats is going down on the Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 of March, with Supermarket and Amoeba Muzak. Original underground electronic music and live VJing in the Big Star Basement.
US Definitive Jux rapper Cage is releasing a new album later this year, following the well-received 'Hell's Winter' album of 2005. 'Depart From Me' is set to be an even more drastic departure from his drug-, sex- and violence-glorifying days of the Smut Peddlers and his 'Agent Orange' album. Even 'Hell's Winter' had its fair share of drug tracks, so it's going to be interesting to see what else he's got in him. Actor Shia LaBeouf (of 'Transformers' and 'Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull' has stated in an interview that he would like to play Cage in an upcoming feature-film focusing on the rapper's life.
Cypress Hill frontman B-Real is releasing a solo LP. Titled 'Smoke And Mirrors', it's good to see that B isn't compromising on themes without his bandmates around.
Rumour has it that legendary hip-hop production/DJ duo Da Beatminerz are interested in touring Australia, and working with some Australian artists while they're at it. Comprised of Mr Walt and DJ Evil Dee, they've produced for Black Moon, KRS-One, Jean Grae, Big Daddy Kane and many more underground hip-hop artists. The best part of this rumour is that Black Moon MC Buckshot might be coming with them.
