Lamplight
Independent
"Fun" is not a word one would use to describe Lamplight's self-titled album That's not to say that there aren't positive descriptives, however: eerie, epic and emotionally explosive all come to mind. Thankfully, that's the sound the Melbourne based group were going for, and they've pulled it off beautifully. With the interchanging lead vocalist and often whole band group harmonies, as well as the broad selection of instruments used throughout the recording, Lamplight have definitely produced something they can be proud of. And they went to great lengths to do so; for example recording Swallowing The Key and Image House in Old Castlemaine Gaol in Victoria.
Such a setting is perfect for the beautifully melodic quintet. The combination of piano, strings and mixed percussion evoking an enchanting haunted house - in fact, the artwork on this release suggests that they had a Ghost ship in mind. This record never dulls, the eight tracks running together so well that they may as well be one, and yet each is good enough to stand alone. Together though they are a powerful tempter for the listener to drift away into the mystical land that Lamplight obviously come from. Like a rare find you make in an antique store, this album is not necessarily about to be played dry or become an instant favorite, but is special enough to treasure, and, when just the right moment comes, beautiful enough to enjoy with a deserving sense of admiration.
