Puff 'n' Stuff
They look like they barely escaped from the 80s with their tattoos and leather jackets, but Las Vegas natives Escape The Fate, with new lead singer Craig Mabbit, managed to do just that and will be playing at Fowler's Live on Tue 22 July.
Life may be a holiday for punk rockers Unwritten Law and Sprung Monkey, but that doesn't mean they don't enjoy playing the odd gig, and it's a safe bet that HQ will once again be hosting a full house when they join forces with Perth rockers Elora Danan on Fri 22 Aug.
It's just not a Friday The 13th without at least one or two themed shows, and Twenty Twenty Metal are stepping up this time around with the appropriately titled 'Friday The 13th Metal Fest' at Gawler's Starplex Theatre. Fulfilling the metal part of the equation for this monster all ages show are Skintilla, Splyne, San Marcos, Shot In Paris, Ridiculed Belief, Day Of Wrath, Yellow Megaman, Plug, Oilseed and Absinthe Betrayed.
Renowned Portuguese avant-garde composer Rafael Toral will visit Adelaide for the first time, presenting three pieces for modified and customised electronics in what he calls "post-free jazz electronic music." Toral will play The Jade Monkey on Saturday 5 July, presented by Token Gesture, the people who have brought Chris Corsano, Mani Neumeier, and Philip Jeck here this year.
Sydney electronica-rockers Grafton Primary got a taste for touring the nation on their support slots for Faker recently, so they have hooked themselves up with their very own headlining tour to plug their new single, She Knows It. Along with E.L.F. (that's Darren Cross from Gerling in case you missed him last time, kids), they'll be blasting into Rocket Bar on Fri 27 June.
It's been a long time coming, but Carpathian are back on the war path. After taking a bit of time out from writing and recording their new album 'Isolation' to be the only Aussie band on the Soundwave bill earlier this year, they're back to remind everyone what Australian hardcore is all about. With The Broderick in support, they'll be playing a huge all ages show at Fowler's Live on Fri 8 Aug.
With their fourth album out now The Herd are ready to hit the road, but because it would be strange to tour an album named 'Summerland' in the depths of winter (even stranger than releasing said album at the start of winter), they're holding off that tour just long enough for things to start warming up a little. So it'll be a warm Spring evening when the 8-piece rolls into Fowler's Live with The Last Kinection on Sat 6 Sep.
With a mix of alternative rock and hip-hop, KiD CuDI may be an innovative music-maker, but boy could he use some tips on capitalisation. Fortunately, his fondness for the caps lock key should have no bearing on his DJ set at Electric Light on Fri 20 June.
Believe it or not, when Nicky Bomba plays at The Gov on Sun 29 June it will be as part of his first ever solo tour. The longtime frontman for reggae/ funk outfit Bomba, this outing will see him taking a bit more of a roots approach, though support act Vorn Doolette's already got that side of his act down.
After a year spent earning their chops, Jimmy & The Mirrors are set to bust a few with their debut EP 'The Rise And Fall Of Dow Jones', which they will launch at Fad Bar on Fri 27 June... Local rock acts Hard Copy, Overdrive and Incarnadine are joining forces for a big night of hard rock entertainment on Sat 21 June at the Adelaide Bowling Club... Angelik will be celebrating singer Laken's birthday with a rocking show at Fad Bar on Sat 14 June featuring Back$eat Romeos and Toxic Shock.
Triple J Unearthed winners Lamplight have a new album out, but are already gazing forward into the future. See them playing at Fowler's Live on Fri 20 June as they harmoniously march ever onward.
Now Puff's usually a patient type of news column, and when news came that Vampire Weekend would be playing at Splendour In The Grass as well as a few East Coast sideshows but had no love for Adelaide, Puff took the news with equanimity. Ditto Sigur Ros, but now things are getting out of hand. Though the second round hasn't been announced yet, you don't need to be an grade A gumshoe to figure out who's going to be on it when new indie sensation Tokyo Police Club's solo dates straddle that magic weekend in Byron, and New Young Pony Club have scheduled their own shows for a couple of days after the festival. But Puff's had enough of these all too-exclusive clubs, and is just about ready to start the far more welcoming 'play Adelaide or prepare to be libelled' club.
One act that isn't leaving Adelaide in the lurch, however, is Devo. Original members Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald and Bob Casale will be taking audiences back to the future with their proto-electro-pop at Thebarton Theatre on Mon 4 August with able support, both musically and mentally, form Regurgitator.
With nine SAMI awards and a Triple J Unearthed badge tucked into her belt, it's fair to say that Robyn Habel has earned her stripes, and with a swag of new indie-pop songs at the ready, she'll be showing them off with her band The Rain at the Gov's front bar on Sat 21 June and the Grace Emily on Thurs 26 June.
After a bit of time off, Wolf & Cub have been busy working with the brains behind The Bumblebeez on their new record, and to be honest, a pairing like that really could end up sounding like anything. The first single, One To The Other, has already been released to give people a sneak peek of what to expect, and in celebration they have organised a national tour with The Holidays that ends up at home at The Ed Castle on Sat 5 July.
It's not often that Puff gets to use the word 'supertour', and that's not just because it's not a real word. The fact is, co-headlining tours are becoming a rare breed, but with Gyroscope and Shihad joining forces after both headlining their own successful tours recently, it's fair to say that they share the top billing this time around. Kicking off at Splendour In The Grass, they'll do a (very extensive) lap of the country with Sugar Army that takes in Mannum's Pretoria Hotel on Sat 6 Sep and HQ on Sun 7 Sep.
The battle of the indie nights continues with Bootleg in the red corner at The Electric Light Hotel on Sat 14 June. Leading with the thick guitar melodies and stoner fuzz rhythms of Kytes Of Omar, they'll then bite off a chunk of the competition's ear with Tyger Tyger's indie funk before finishing things with the classic rock of Black Knight.
While in the blue corner, Wish will come out swinging with Zeta before local siblings BrotherSister duck and weave amid intricate melodies and Sydney indie rockers Sailmaker make sure they stay on their feet. Then Disko Disko DJs and DJ Dan! Dan! Dan! Vs Koala Attack will be ready to tap in and take things into the wee hours of Sat 21 June.
It's been a long time since Puff heard from Theredsunband, and to be honest Puff thought that particular act was no more, but after a lengthy hiatus they will return to grace the stage of The Jade Monkey on Sat 12 July.
The Sunpilots already have a head start on most bands with a frontman named Raj Siva-Rajah, but they've decided that they don't want to rest on those laurels and want the world to know them for their melodic rock as well, which is why they'll be playing at Jive on Fri 8 Aug.
When you've had the number one album in the country, it makes sense to organise some kind of a tour behind it, and that's exactly what Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson intend to do. With a full band featuring Bill Chambers, John Watson, James Gillard and Mark Collins, there will also be an increasingly common acoustic section when they kick off the tour at The Thebby on Wed 13 Aug.
After Drowning Pool postponed their shows indefinitely at very short notice to the disappointment of their fans (and support act Puddle Of Mudd), Lacuna Coil have taken note and given a bit more warning. Though they won't be coming here next month as originally announced, they have promised to visit us again next February as part of next year's Soundwave festival.
Blacklisted will be playing at The Underground with 50 Lions on Fri 4 July... Fri 27 June sees five up and coming local acts at Live On Light Square as Enmity, Trinity Road, Satoria, Oilseed & A Lapse In Reality band together to tear the house down in a night of hard rock and melody... The Getaway Plan play an all-ages show at The Gov on Sat 28 June, which means that for once they won't be the youngest people in the room.
Robert Forster will celebrate the release of his latest album, 'The Evangelist', by taking his faith healing show on the road, looking after his flock and curing an assortment of ailments at The Governor Hindmarsh on Wed 6 Aug.
After leaving Adelaide for Melbourne some time ago, singer-songwriter Krista Polvere decided that even that wasn't big enough smoke for her, and made her way to New York last year. With a debut album 'Here Be Dragons' out now, though, she's decided to come back home for a show at the Grace Emily on Wed 18 June.
After the success of their support slots on The Devil Wears Prada tour, Gold Coast rockers Mourning Tide and fresh faced Melbourne youngsters House Vs Hurricane are embarking on their very own tour before the banana benders bunker down to record their sophomore album, hitting Fowler's Live on Sun 27 July.
Snowman's new album 'The Horse, The Rat And The Swan' sounds like the set-up to a very strange joke, but there's nothing funny about the maelstrom of tribal beats, scything guitars and lush keys contained within, and nor is there the slightest trace of mirth in their announcement that they expect to see you at their show with Baseball at Jive on Wed 9 July.
With a seven week North American tour in July, there's not much time to catch Redhead before they leave, but because they don't want anyone on either side of the Pacific to miss out, they've scheduled their album launch with The John Woods Band and Adam Page Solo at The Gov for Sat 20 June.
