The Kranksy Sisters

It's been a few years since the decidedly odd trio of Queensland raised Kransky siblings have descended upon Adelaide in their ubiquitous Morris Major, but the wait will be over when they present four shows at this year's Cabaret Festival.

Bandleader Mourne Kransky informs me that their other sister - well half sister Dawn - has stepped up to the breach "because Arva is working with the Hornbell Military Marching Band now. She was taken by the tattoo when we were overseas and the next thing you know, she was exchanging music with them".

After a deep sigh Mourne admits to something that may well be closer to the truth. "She's always liked food and she's happy with the six chops for breakfast. They have free food in the army and that's important to Arva and Dawn is settling in now though she is shy. She used to work as a librarian at the Esk hospital and that I guess was a rather solitary job."

Since Mourne and I had last chatted, the Kransky Sisters had toured not only to New Zealand, but to Europe and even Tasmania, picking up an award at the prestigious Edinburgh festival and going on to play Stockholm. It was explained to me that they still take the Morris even if it's as far as Europe and pack a few home comforts and necessities like Orange Slice biscuits and a side of lamb in the meat safe; with rather dire results in the last case.

"Yes we took a side of lamb but it went off. I guess it was a bit hot in that part of the ship. Things did go well in Edinburgh though and we won an award there. It's on the mantelpiece next to Arva's greyhound trophy won at the Esk fair. Yes she won it for her tuba playing and we polish it on Fridays. Oh, and we met a famous person there who came to see our show - the actor Gabriel Byrne. Later this year we'll be going to Holland and Berlin. We were going to go to Portugal too but we'll do that next year instead."

Before Mourne gets back to helping her sisters with all of those domestic duties, I take time to ask her what local Adelaide audiences can expect from the new show - 'Three Bags Full'.

"There are all sorts of interesting things. We've got some new songs and we've been a lot of places in Europe so we've got some stories to tell," she enthuses, although that may be the wrong word. When pressed, Mourne admits that will be "some new songs from lovely people. The Bee Gees - they were from Queensland and they're world famous - Grace Jones, the Eagles and more from one of our favourites - AC/DC and we'll be sporting new twin sets from Glenda's Fashion House. You know they have twin sets dating back to the 1930s; and they're new too. They just never sold."
