Meem
The Bumpy EP
Non Label/ Creative Vibes
Meem, also known as Michael Moebus, is one of the most respected producers, DJs and radio hosts of Sydney's dance music scene, particularly for his unique take on funk, jazz and electro-boogie that has seen him pack festival and club dance floors alike. He is also known for the uniqueness of his CD releases, with limited numbers often in a handmade package of materials including wood, cotton and felt. And this release is no exemption: printed in vinyl, sewn together, secured with press stud buttons.
Looking past this, it is safe to say that the content is as impressive as the album faŤade. True to his reputation, Meem has followed on from the success of his much acclaimed 2003 album, 'The Big Hoo Hah' and produced a bevy of funk treats, that will surely satisfy a whole range of listeners. U Can Make It is an old school funk gem, with its infectious horns, minimal but sultry vocals and playful syths, whereas Baldy Face and Open Your Eyes are excursions in nu jazz, the traditional sounds tinged with electro stylings. His innovativeness is also shown off with the abstract Diodat Splat with its mish mash of beats and melodies, and the dubby flavours of Yofint Dub.
However, it is on the dance floor fillers that Meem appears to be in his element. The candy boogie funk of U Go Sleigh, the good old dirty funk of Fayent Skink, and the acid jazz of U R Lazyafa are irresistible and sure to induce involuntary boogie downs.
Meem has done nothing but add to his shining reputation with this release. Although technically an EP, it is still packed with ten of the freshest and funkiest tracks around, and it will be no surprise if this CD finds it self on full rotation in your CD players.
