7 Things To Do In Adelaide This Fortnight

Puff 'n' Stuff

Mammal have just finished recording their debut album in Melbourne, and will unleash the first single at Jive on Sat 28 June. Snapping and snarling alongside them, Soft White Machine and Sydonia will also make appearances on the night.

For the second time in a couple of years, Sub Pop alt-country faves Band Of Horses will be coming all the way over to Australia, only to give Adelaide a miss, but what's really got Puff riled up is that they don't even have the decency to look sorry. In fact, they look positively chirpy about leaving us off their itinerary.

Death Cab For Cutie have also decided to bypass Adelaide on their so-called national tour, but doing his best to make up for all of this in his own little way is Bobby Flynn, who simply can't get enough of our fair town, Only a couple of months after his last visit, he'll once again come a-knockin' on Fri 27 June with his band The Omega 3, and he's not even spruiking a CD or single - he just plain likes playing here.

Violinist Antal Szalai and his Gypsy Band will be living up to their name with an extended trip through Australia over several months that includes 6 stops across our own state. The rovers will play Whyalla's Middleback Theatre on Tues 17 June, Port Lincoln's Civic Theatre on Wed 18 June, Port Pirie's Keith Mitchell Theatre on Thurs 19 June, the Barossa Valley Arts Centre in Tanunda on Fri 20 Jun, our own Dunstan Playhouse on Sat 21 June and Mt Gambier's Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on Sun 22 June,

Cut Copy will be joined by The Juan Maclean and The Shocking Pinks at HQ on Thurs 12 June... Sebastian Bach may have moved venues, but he'll still be bringing his A game to HQ on Thurs 29 May - it's the only one he's got...The State Versus are taking over Fowler's Live on Fri 13 June, with the help of The Scissor File, Vampirates and Heroes & Villains

Punk types like to think they have a monopoly on this whole DIY culture thing, but it just ain't so. In fact, if Really Good In Theory is anything to go by, they could use learning a thing or two. Adelaide's premier celebration of DIY culture, it'll gather a range of record labels, book sellers, zine makers, secondhand 'dealers' and, of course bands. Among the musical selections will be No Through Road, Avant Gardeners, Cities Roamed By Cannibals, Jon Dale and The Monies, all for just $8. The whole shebang can be found this Saturday 31 May at The Irish Club on Carrington St.

After a drought that's lasted several years, Adelaide's been treated to a number of promising new indie nights lately, and among the treats in this antedeluvian feast is Popsicle. After a successful first show, the second instalment will take place at the Ed Castle on Fri 13 June with a 'Melody Pop' theme. Humble Bee and The Warsaw Flowers will provide tunes, while DJ Kid Language Barrier spins them, but this is no ordinary gig - it's a veritable party. What makes it so, you ask? How about badges, push pops, showbags and facepainting. Let me say that again. Showbags and facepainting, kids - what more could you want?

The Hipnote Autumn Series keeps coming, on the first and third Monday of each month at the Wheaty, and next in line this Mon 2 Jun is InterZone Express. The improvised cross-art performance will involve two dancers and visual accompaniments while Patrick Saracino and Daniel Varrichio embark on an analogue exploration. They will be followed by Chris Martin & Derek Pascoe, who will improvise their own free styles on piano and sax.

The good news just doesn't stop for metal lovers, especially those fond of the Scandinavian brand. Swedish death metal lords Dismember will leave a trail of fans with lingering tinnitus and outraged parents in the wake of their 'Australia Burns' tour, which hits Enigma Bar on Wed 16 July with Tzun Tzu and Altars.

If the Vikings are lords of all things metal, surely their Teutonic neighbours do not lag far behind. At any rate, you can be sure that nobody will be picking fights with German metalcore group Caliban when they rampage into Fowler's Live on Sun 17 Aug with Melbourne heavyweights Her Nightmare in tow.

Guy Blackman's one of these renaissance type guys who do a bit of everything, but the Chapter Music main man has called his debut solo record 'Adult Baby', which either implies he's modest enough to acknowledge his own foibles, or so selfless that he's dedicated the solo debut to someone else. Either way, he'll be spinning his rich ballads on Fri 20 June at Rocket Bar with support from Hit The Jackpot, No Through Road and Shame Spiral.

On a charitable note, a bunch of local acts have organized a benefit evening for victims of the recent cyclone in Myanmar, taking place on Sat 31 May at The Cavern. For $15, they give you the pleasure of witnessing Point Of Difference, Palky, Jupiter Lead, Ben Dring, Monkeybox, Rob McDade, Temple Tigers, Nicholas Tweedy, The British Robots, Tara & Adam and Interval. Do the math and you'll find that's six bands and five solo acts, and with all proceeds going to World Vision Myanmar Cyclone Relief Fund that's hard to fault.

Well, after many years of waiting, Puff's finally willing to concede that The Avalanche's next record is probably a lost cause, but on the plus side the many talented members of that crew are still doing solo projects and ensuring that parties around the country are not devoid of fun. One such member is James De La Cruz, and he'll be showing off his turntable trickery on Sun 8 June.

Japanese beatsmith extraordinaire DJ Krush is once again returning to our shores, playing at The Electric Light Hotel on Thurs 29 May...It's time for local melodic rockers In Fiction to finally release their debut album, and they'll be launching it with a bang on Sat 14 June at The Gov.

Another Adelaide band that have finally got around to recording after plenty of time spent playing around the traps is Amber Calling. With a national tour currently underway, it'll be a little while before they can get back to launch 'The Truth About Lies' EP on Sat June 28 at an all ages show with The Getaway Plan and Closure In Moscow.

Melodramatic indie pop duo An Horse ride into town with I Heart Hiroshima for a show at Jive on Thurs 5 June with bedroom pop act Lumonics. To show just how appropriate the support act is, here's An Horse thinking about dreamy pop in their very own bedroom.

Look to the cover of this very magazine and you'd be forgiven for thinking that Clare Bowditch is hiding something. In fact, at the moment there's nothing behind that curtain but she'll be ready to reveal who will perform a duet of Your Other Hand with her at Jive on Fri 20 June just as soon as she can. The thing is, she's running a competition through her website (that'd be www.clarebowditch.com), and she needs to wait for the final application date to pass (this Fri 30 May) before she can judge them and decide. That means if you're quick, it could be your name in lights when she pulls back the curtain.

Trust that Adalita to go one better, though. Geelong's finest, Magic Dirt, have a new album that they want to travel the country spruiking this August, and they're inviting bands from any genre to submit CDs or demos to Magic Dirt, PO Box 297, Fairfield Vic 3078.

Fresh from featuring as Triple J's Feature Album, Sydney pop kids Sparkadia (who have already been confirmed for Glastonbury, the lucky so and so's) will kick off a national tour at Jive on Sat 14 June with help from Dirty Secrets and Femme Fatales.

After last year's highly successful concerts, The Soweto Gospel Choir returns with a brand new show on Sat 21 and Sun 22 June at the Festival Theatre... The Flow play with Bellusira (who will be launching their latest single) and Straitjacket Fashion at the Rhino Room on Fri 6 June... Sour Sob Bob, Raw Dub and The Fallen Saints will be warming the hearths of the SA Folk Centre with a dose of roots reggae and the blues on Thurs 5 June.

If there's a locale in the world with a higher Punk Per Capita quotient than Orange County, then Puff's yet to hear of it, but even in Southern California things have quietened down of late. Determined to buck the trend are Ignite, who after a lengthy break will be back touring behind their latest album, 'Our Darkest Days', filling Enigma Bar with hardcore, rock, and of course punk, on Fri 18 July.

The Whitlams are busy figuring out what the best tracks they've ever recorded are, because they're about to release a greatest hits album. Puff's guessing it'll be fairly heavy on 'Eternal Nightcap' material, but whatever the case, they'll be playing those very same greatest hits at The Gov on Fri 22 August.

The Vaudevillains have been looming pretty large in Melbourne's psychobilly scene of late, and they've decided it's high time to come terrorise us down south. So whether you'll be lining up outside or giving it a wide berth, you'd best know that they'll play at The Worldsend on Sat 31 May with Son Of Dad and at The Underground the very next day with Hoodoo Voodoo Dollz.

It's a while away, but the entrants in the Emergenza Battle Of The Bands sure get points for enthusiasm, as they're already spreading the word to anyone and everyone that they should be at Fowler's Live on Fri 18 July or, well, be square. Starting the night off at 7 will be To Know End, followed by Suspicous Mustard, The Funky Scum Rumour, 4 Kings Loud, Raging Wireless, The Living Daylights, Kaptan Reefer & The Kone Scrapers, Dirt Playground and Black Orchid, and if you can't find a winner among that lot, you're not looking hard enough.

Puff loves a big old bash put together by local acts, and that's exactly what will be going down on Sat 20 June at The Gov when Redhead, John Woods Band and Adam Page Solo join forces to form the Adelaide local music equivalent of Voltron, protecting the innocent citizens of the planet Arus with their sweet, sweet melodies.

All through the month of June, Nexus Cabaret will be warming up audiences with a series of concerts bringing the Music Of The Mediterranean to Adelaide. Sat 7 June will feature Turkish Grooves, while on Fri 13 local four-piece ensemble Dionysus will re-create the atmosphere of a Greek Taverna and Sat 21 will see Melbourne trio Ananke bring together Greek Rembetika, Ancient Byzantine and Medieval chants with tango and jazz.

After his ex-bandmates from The Jam popped in a mere few months ago the modfather himself, Mr. Paul Weller, will be making the Thebarton Theatre just that little bit more stylish on Fri 15 August, and he'd like you to join him. What a feller.

Tristan Newsome has had enough of Brisbane and is coming back to Adelaide, while his fellow balladeer Anthony D'Antonio is just about to set off on a tour that may take him all the way up to Queensland, so to celebrate their paths intersecting briefly the two will play together at The Grace on Wed 4 June.

This country is not blessed with a wealth of self-styled alt-country and pop aficionados, but New Rules For Boats have bravely stepped into this void, and with a new single from their album 'Thousands' to promote, they've booked themselves a slot at The Exeter on Fri 6 June with The Keepsakes.

The dates have been announced for the second Adelaide International Guitar Festival, and though the full program won't be launched for a month or two, Puff does know that between Sat 29 Nov - Sun 7 Dec there will once again be a series of outdoor concerts and performances around the Festival Theatre complex encompassing roots, blues, classical, country and rock guitar playing.

You'd think Texans would know better than to taunt us about the drought that's been going on for a while, but heavy rockers Drowning Pool defy logic. That's the only explanation for inviting Puddle Of Mudd to support them ay HQ on Fri 30 May, and Puff can only conject that it'll be a real sweaty show.

Shihad have been building up to 'Beautiful Machine' for a while, and though it might not be their rockiest record, they're still pretty chuffed with it, and will be doing their darnedest to convince you, the punter, of its merit at Live On Light Square on Sat 21 June.

The Dropkick Murphys play with Sick Of It All at Live On Light Square on Fri 30 May... Dead Letter Circus, Many Machines On Nine and Quiet Child will be rocking Enigma Bar on Thurs 5 June...It might be a school night, but Thebarton Theatre will still be rocking to the sounds of an all ages Parkway Drive show on Thurs 5 June.

Bringing together Bliss N Eso, True Live, The Funkoars and The Winnie Coopers, Unified is a truly national tour, and though it'll be a little out of the way at Flinders Uni, to make up for it the whole show will be happening two nights in a row, on Thurs 29 and Fri 30 May.
