Puffio

It's a new week in the wonderful world of Puffio and the troubles which beset the mind are as nothing compared to troubles in the world. With that sobering thought in (the back of our) minds, let's examine a trove of fun things to do around this beautifully autumnal city, shall we...

Beginning with the news that Driller, contrary as ever, has popped his balding head up from the burrow to report that his art exhibition 'Sorry' opens on Wed 21 May at the new space around town, Gallery 139. Funnily enough, this is situated at 139 Magill Road, Stepney.

After about 15 years working in the arts industries (various) around Adelaide, and mostly as a publicist, the Adelaide Festival Centre's Michael Nelson has moved on and is already working at his new job in insolvency and liquidation. His former role at the centre, that of Marketing Executive, Marketing & Corporate Relation, is to be taken over by Jade Harlin.

Arts Access guru Chris Wainwright has posted a note to the effect that he is relinquishing his position, prior to taking up the new appointment of General Manager with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra.

He gets around a bit! In announcing their new board member, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra has drawn on a lifetime's experience in the arts to bolster their already strong team: former Festival Of The Arts Director, and Coriole Director Anthony Steel has agreed to take up a three year appointment to the Board of the orchestra.

Announcing an exhibition which coincides with The Australian Ballet's 'French Connections' season at the Festival Theatre, the Adelaide Festival Centre's Performing Arts Collection's latest exhibition is 'Ballets Russes In Australia: A Lasting Legacy', on display in the Festival Theatre Foyer from Tues 20 May. 'Ballet Russes' explores the impact and inspiration generated by the tour of the Ballets Russes companies to Australia between 1936 and 1940 and the lasting connection formed with Adelaide, The exhibition concludes on Sun 20 July.

'Earth Lines' is the depictions of landscape through batik by Aboriginal artist Helena Geiger currently on show at the Fabric Of Life gallery, but closing quite soon, on Sat 17 May. Geiger, expresses her Aboriginal heritage through a combined passion for Indigenous Art and Fabric, This, her first Adelaide exhibition, is at Fabric Of Life, on Melbourne St in North Adelaide.

Currently open exhibitions at Tandanya of particular significance to members of the 'stolen generations', since artist Pamela Croft Warcon is of that generation... her exhibition is entitled 'Belonging'. There are two other exhibitions on display at Tandanya; Arne Areye 'All The Plants' and Ngarlurgu 'All Of Us'.

'Metaphysique d Ephemres' may be the art of "the peculiar, the surrendered, the derelict and the surreal", but in any case in the 'Metaphysique d Ephemres' exhibition, objects lost, found or discarded are re-discovered and recreated by Adelaide artists Gregory Amber and Evangeline Feary. The exhibition can be found in the Light Square Gallery at TAFE SA, Adelaide Centre for the Arts, on Light Square, from Wed 14 May. Apparently Gregory Amber and Evangeline Feary live a part time reclusive existence in a secret hideout, without neighbours, on the fringe of the city. And spend their time foraging, so presumably they know and understand that some lost things are not intended to be found.

A new queer cabaret night, Golden Gaytyme has opened at Higher Ground Inc on Light Square, and is scheduled for the first Thurs of every month. Golden Gaytyme is hosted by the gorgeous Loki Ricus and features acts by Meg Lamania, and Broadway Babies with DJ's Monski Mouse and Kikki Twitch.

In this day and age when every day and every week and every year seems to be the International Day Of The... [supply your own cause here] it's pleasing to note IDAHO, on Fri 16 May. IDAHO is the International Day Against Homophobia, surely a good thing to passively protest about.

While we're at it, support your local queer festival - Feast Festival is hosting a fundraiser Quiz Night and Auction on Sat 7 June at the Goodwood Community Hall from 7pm. Book a table or register with Feast and they'll find you a seat. Call 8231 4322 to reserve your seat!

Coming up at the end of the month - from Fri 30 May in fact - is Australia's 1st National Conference Of Accompanists, and to take place at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in the University of Adelaide. Claims the Press Release, somewhat boasting, "The world's first renowned vocal accompanist, Gerald Moore, made famous the question "Am I too loud?". Was she? How long does it take to debate such a fine point? The conference runs until Sun 1 June in any case. More info from the Accompanists' Guild of SA.

The ASO Goes to the Movies concert has just announced a second evening, the two sessions being Fri 30 at 8.00pm and Sat 31 May at 8.00pm in the Festival Theatre. Relive some of the finest movie music moments in history with the full strength Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Brett Kelly and special guest Rachael Beck... from the romance of 'Gone With The Wind' and 'Beauty & The Beast', the action of James Bond and adventure of 'Pirates Of The Caribbean', lovers of the silver screen will savour every moment of ASO Goes to Movies. Be inspired by some of the great film composers of our time in John Williams, Max Steiner, Irving Berlin and Elmer Bernstein.
