The 'Undeniable Things' exhibition is an exploration of what is undeniable to the exhibiting artists, a discovery of what is 'palpably true' to them. In truth, it's an exhibition featuring the works of Georgina Mills, Geoff Pratt, Belinda Shaw, Jaynie Langford, Claire Cutler, Gina Ray-Zwar, Hannah Carlyle, Zoe Brooks and Anja Jagsch, at the Bruce Wilson Gallery at the O'Halloran Hill Tafe, from Thurs 8 May.
Coming up at the end of the month is a recital which features three remarkable performers together on stage... soprano Cheryl Barker and baritone Peter Coleman-Wright with pianist Piers Lane in a Music Viva presentation at the Adelaide Town Hall. They will perform songs from the golden era of Lied including Mendelssohn's Gruss, Strauss' Morgen, Wolf's Der Feuerreiter and Schumann's duets of love inspired by nature. The program's centrepiece is the world premiere of Richard Mills' song cycle Songlines Of The Heart's Desires, a piece written expressly for these artists and commissioned by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust. The performance is on Sat 31 May from 8pm.
The Adelaide Festival Centre is proud to present 'Anangu Backyard: Stories for Children', a popular visual art exhibition featuring artwork from South Australia's Anangu/ Pitjantjatjara/ Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands returns in 2008 with a focus on storytelling between generations. The exhibition co-incides with the 16th ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival (from Fri 9 to Sun 18 May), which is being held at the Festival Centre. Of special note is Sat 10 May, when there will be free sessions with Pitjantjatjara storytellers (1 - 4pm) and a special performance by the visiting Ernabella School Choir (at 6pm).
This is the final week that you'll be lucky enough to find the work of Ben's Quici on display at A Room Of Her Own, in Croydon. Quici was awarded the Cibo Emerging Artist Prize in 2006-2007 and was recently selected to participate in Gallery 139's inaugural survey of emerging South Australian artists. This is his painting, Loyalty, and the exhibition runs until Sun 11 May.
'Paintings, Prints & Pots' is a collection of, well, strangely enough, it's likely to be all the items listed above in the title. Someone of rare and gentle genius came up with that one, eh? The exhibition is on display from Fri 2 May at the wonderful Pepper Street art Centre at Magill, and features the work of over 20 emerging and established artists.
Quickly now! The MRC is deep into it's season of the Japanese Film Festival, which is currently running until Sat 3 May. Some of their stuff - like the Seijun Suzuki films being shown - 'Branded To Kill' (M) and 'Tokyo Drifter' (M) are pretty hardcore cinema stuff.
The Accompanists' Guild of SA and Recitals Australia in association with the Elder Conservatorium of Music presents Jonathan Lemalu and Malcolm Martineau in Recital on Sun 1 June at 2.30pm. The performance will take place in the Elder Hall at The University of Adelaide, and is one to enter into your diary.
Galleon Theatre Group presents Eric Chappell's comedy 'Up And Coming' in a premiere performance for South Australia, which opens on Thurs 1 May. They claim this theatre show is in the vein of the popular television series 'Yes Minister', so this light hearted comedy explores the backroom manoeuvres and schemes at a political conference, where no-one can be trusted and everyone has a secret to hide. 'Up And Coming' can be found at the Domain Theatre, Marion Cultural Centre.
