Puff 'n' Stuff If you want real rock and roll and you want it with blistering organ riffs, there's only one act in Australia who can leave you satisfied, and it's hardly a matter of Rocket Science figuring out who that is. With a new album that the band have produced themselves, it's time to hit the road and they'll be sure to get all sweaty when they're joined by I Heart Hiroshima at Jive on Fri 9 May.
Bad news for fans of The Mountain Goats, it seems, as John Darnielle has had to cancel their tour "for personal medical reasons." There is no word on rescheduled dates as yet, but the lead mountain goat did promise that "we will make it up to you all!"
If the response Puff has received from dB contributors is anything to go by, most of Adelaide should be in a tizzy over the news that Panic At The Disco are coming to our fair city for the first time. Their last tour sold out in a matter of minutes, and with a second album, 'Pretty. Odd.' in the offing, this one is sure to do the same when tickets go on sale on Tue 15 April. The show itself isn't until Mon 25 Aug, though, when they will be accompanied by The Academy Is... at the Entertainment Centre.
Peter Combe & The Juicy Juicy Green Band will be up to all sorts of crazy hi-jinks when they play at Jive on Sun 6 April, and the evergreen performer is capping off his recent return to popularity by recording the performance for a live DVD, so don't pretend to Puff that you're a die-hard fan unless you can prove it with footage of yourself groaning at the sound of a bellyflop in a pizza.
Gabriella Cilmi has been confirmed as support for James Blunt's Australian tour that hits Thebarton Theatre on Wed 7 May... Aussie music stalwarts Ian Moss and Jon Stevens will play two shows together at The Gov on Fri 6 and Sat 7 June... local metal fiends Octanic finally have an album out, and their doing everything in their power to let you know about it, including asking Puff to let you know that it's at Live On Light Square on Sat 19 April.
Reports suggest that a large, heavy Mammal has been seen prowling the streets of Adelaide, and Puff warns readers to be careful because there's every possibility that should you encounter said beast, there's a strong possibility that there will be roaring, pounding and even shredding involved. If you're still not deterred, the word on the street is that it will be present when there is a monster of a show with Bushido and Quiet Child on Fri 11 April at the Electric Light Hotel.
Dan England may have spent 2006 supporting Shannon Noll around Australia, but now he's stealing the spotlight for himself and his band, the appropriately named Thieves. Between them, they've conceived a mammoth year-long tour taking in every state and territory in our land and racking up approximately five shows per week. How does he do it, you wonder? Well, this column's not entirely sure, but what Puff does know is that it will incorporate shows at Naracoorte's Kincraig Hotel on Thurs 10, Robe's Caledonian Inn on Fri 11, Meningie Hotel on Sat 12, The Grace Emily on Sun 13, Port Lincoln's Grand Tasman on Sat 19 and The Seabreeze hotel in Tumby Bay on un 20 April. Phew!
Local indie poppers Room One were an act on the rise last year, but the name seems to have disappeared from gig guides and conversation. But in an effort of detective ingenuity worthy of a Dashiell Hammett novel, Puff tracked the band down and discovered that it had changed its name to The Shiny Brights and will be playing as part of a spectacular all-star local gig at The Gov on Fri 11 April with Former Child Stars, City Riots and Mad Shapes, and with Russia and The Last Broadcast on Sat 12 April at Jive. Here are the Child Stars, who also earn Puff's congratulations for earning the notice of Majorbox Music management.
78 Saab returned to our airwaves and hearts with last year's 'The Bells Line' album, and they're also adding our city to the itinerary of their tour of the same name that hits Jive on Fri 16 May with support form Richard In Your Mind.
Local sextet Tyger Tyger have figured out a way to distil their indie, funk, psych, punk, electro and country influences into plastic form and are getting ready to launch their debut EP, 'Post Orgasm Depression', in the next few months, but before that they'll be back at the Rhino Room on Friday 12 April with The Touch and The Love Zombies.
The Supporters don't believe in having a complicated game plan - they just play straight-up, hooky Australian rock and roll, and hope that you like it. Fortunately, plenty of people do, enough that they've scheduled a national tour that hits Adelaide on Fri 25 April - that's ANZAC day - when they'll be playing with Swayback and The Temps at the Crown & Anchor.
Few bands are as misleadingly named as The Silents, but Puff doesn't hold their incomplete grasp of the English language against them, especially as they've admitted with their debut album that they have 'Things To Learn'. Coming halfway between garage rock and modern indie pop, they'll be playing at The Edinburgh Castle on Sat 3 May.
Merging a technology-based orchestra with live acoustic instruments, A Sound Mind like to do things their way, and they will be doing exactly that at The Gov on Fri 25 April with The Fak and Kytes Of Omar...Macabre, romantic and thoroughy different, Plastic Palace Alice have just launched their debut album, 'The Great Depression', and hit Rocket Bar on Fri 2 May.
Melbourne power pop group The Wellingtons haven't been to Adelaide since the two great shows they played last year, and they've decided that it's high time to return. Puff says hear, hear, and that's exactly what you are encouraged to do when they play The Crown & Anchor on Thurs 24 April with Blow Up Betty and The Keepsakes, at The Grace Emily on Fri 25 April and at The Cavern Club with Deborah Conway on Sat 26 April.
The Hilltop Hoods initiative is awarded once a year to promising talent in our fine city, and it doesn't get handed out lightly. But just in case you're not sure that winner Subsketch will provide enough entertainment for you, he's loaded the launch of his debut album at the Rhino Room on Fri 4 April with a very full swag of local talent. As well as Subskecth's set with The Antidote, performing on the night are Moose & Squirrel, Zeal, Lonely Shinobi and DJ Menace.
Sydney artist Matt McBeath is a purveyor of sweet melodies and Australianisms not entirely unlike Darren Hanlon (who he has toured with), and he'll be celebrating his new album, 'The Morning Seems So Clear' by playing at The Grace Emily on Sat 5 April with Princess One Point Five and Aviator Lane.
Local mashfest rock and rollers The Bovines are playing another show! For the first time in over a year they'll be making noises in front of people at the Crown & Anchor on Fri 11 April with Mona Lisa Overdrive and Isle Of Vision along for the ride.
Puff has heard nary a bad word about Kate Miller-Heidke's debut album 'Little Eve', but it's her live show that sends people into raptures. The former opera singer has left crowds clamouring for more of her theatrical artistry and virtuosic voice, and with her live band in tow she'll be playing at The Gov on Thurs 24 April with Cookie Baker.
After disappearing to the states for several months including a few showcases at South By Southwest in Adelaide's sister city, ethereal singer/ songwriter Whitley is coming back to Australia, and he'll be filling Jive with his warm folktronic sounds on Fri 23 May, supported by American Howie Day and Seagull.
The Bumblebeez may struggle in their attempt to make some sort of sense of their hectic sound collage in a live arena, but that hasn't stopped them from promising big things for their shows. So what's in store? They've promised rap, song, anger and ecstasy. They've promised enough bass to make your will ribs rattle and boundless energy as well as bog-hop Grammy-nominated Dr Love and the tropical booty-pop of Rio. All that and more on Sun 20 April at Rocket Bar.
Local melodic rockers In Fiction are making the leap to the national stage with their first headlining tour after plenty of support slots, and they've also got their debut album, 'Forecast', to be released later in the year. They'll be kicking off the tour at Fowler's Live on Fri 11 April.
Their latest album is called 'Float', but it's a fair bet that the crowd at Flogging Molly's upcoming gig will be sinking more than a few pints to their soundtrack of celtic punk. Boundlessly enthusiastic and bursting with energy, the Hibernian rabble rousers will play at Live On Light Square on Wed 9 April.
In a massive punk tour, Pennywise, The Vandals, Bowling For Soup and Sum 41 will all band together to fight the man, though hopefully not each other. Get ready for circle pits and fist-pumping singalongs a plenty when they break into the Thebarton Theatre on Mon 14 April.
Another massive tour, though one with a slightly different emphasis, hits the Entertainment Centre later in the week on Thurs 17 April. It's on that auspicious date that Korn will be joined by Biohazard, Chimaira and Bloodsimple for an extravaganza of nu-metal, abrasive attitudes and poorly considered hairdos.
After a tour late last year behind the 'Curse Of Lightning' album, Wagons are back to show that lightning can strike twice and will transport audiences with their country death songs aided and abetted by Jimmy & The Mirrors at the Electric Light Hotel on Wed 2 April and the Edinburgh Castle on Thurs 3 April with Antony Of The Future.
Have you heard of That 1 Guy? That 1 pretty crazy guy who plays in a one man band with his 'magic pipe'? As the magic pipe that incorporates a number of instruments, household tools and items of clothing, it's unlikely that you'd get him confused with anyone else, but if this picture doesn't ring any bells, you can make sure when you see him supporting Karnivool with Mere Theory on Tue 22 April at Live On Light Square.
Three club shows over 72 hours in three cities is what DJ Jam is attempting, and if he doesn't get stuck in traffic on Hindley Street, there's every chance he'll manage it. Last in Australia with Snoop Dogg on the Good Vibrations tour, he'll bring hip-hop, RnB, reggae, rock, funk, soul and house to Red Square on Sat 5 April.
They call themselves 'Stink Metal', and Puff is given to believe that this is, in fact, a good thing, but one can only hope given the enclosed spaces in which the band will soon find itself, that the name is not to be taken too literally. But whether is it or not, Se Bon Ki Ra will be stinking up Enigma Bar on Fri 4 April with Obdurate Seduction, Taunt and Day Of Wrath before locking themselves in the studio later in April to record their debut EP.
Up and coming Melbourne post-rock types The Mime Set play at Rocket Bar with Taught By Animals on Fri 18 April...The Yearlings return home from a stint in the US including a performance at the New York Guitar Festival (which inspired our own similar festival) to play at the Wheatsheaf on Sat 5 April with Rosie Burgess... Perth melodic groove pop band Superengine will be playing at The Exeter on Fri 4 April with their xylophone, horns and vintage synths as well as a bunch of catchy songs.
But if it's rock you want, best get yourself down to Fowler' Live on Fri 4 April, because Horsell Common will have plenty for everyone... and Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster will get even heavier when they take the stage at Fowler's Live on Tues 8 April.
Three-piece rockers Cog are embarking on their biggest tour to date, including two shows at The Gov with Sleep Parade. Thurs 12 June will be a licensed all ages show, while the Fri 13 June carries a rating of AO for adult only.
