Puffio

Following the madness which was the Festival and the Fringe, which was followed by the madness which was the Easter long weekend, Puffio took a turn for the worse, deluged by poorly written press releases promising salvation in the form of artistic events which, to be quite frank, paled into insignificance when ranged alongside the madness which heralded the return of the AFL season and the never-ending pundits war about which team might prevail, season ending injuries and top goal scorers. And all that in the first two weeks of competition!

A five-day workshop for young people aged between 15 and 18 years is to be held at the Media Resource Centre as part of Carclew Youth Art's popular School Holiday program. Filmmaker's Boot Camp, for that is what it is called, runs from Mon 14 to Fri 18 April as a intensive, hands-on workshop, and will teach participants the basics of filmmaking from concept to screen. The final films will be screened at the Mercury Cinema and each participant will receive a DVD copy of their finished work. Bookings are essential, of course, so get in touch with Carclew to find out more.

The State Theatre Company has emerged from the shadow of the Festivals, as have many other organisations, and are keen that you know their first major production for the '08 season is upon us, that being Joanna Murray-Smith's 'The Female Of The Species', a comedy with a darker twist. This is a premiere of a revised script from the author of 'Bombshells', performing in the Playhouse from Fri 11 April.

That which used to be known as the Come Out Festival is now known by its longer and Puffio suggests, somewhat less enticing name, The Australian Festival for Young People. In any event, they wish to announce that Sasha Zahra, the former Artistic Director of the Kurruru Indigenous Youth Performing Arts, has been appointed Associate Artistic Director for Come Out 2009. Zahra joinsArtistic Director Jason Cross to develop the program for Come Out 2009 along the theme of 'Colliding Worlds'. Congratulations.

There are other changes afoot in the world of theatre, performing arts and associated nebulous crafts... head honcho of Carclew Youth Arts Jessica Machin has announced that she is shortly to pack her bags and leave the castle - and the state - after five years at the helm, when she takes up her new post as the CEO of Country Arts WA, which would certainly rate as something of a big job to do. Hope she gets the Frequent Flyer miles...

Meanwhile the Adelaide Writers Centre is seeking a Communications Officer, conversant with writing, design and publishing and layout. Contact Barbara Wiesner at the SA Writers Centre for further information, but be very quick about it.

A quick note: The Sunday art and craft market at the Festival Centre will be taking a break during the cooler months from the end of March, to return later in the year.

'Dividing Lines' is works in glass from three fine artists: Ebony Addinsall, Kristel Britcher and Matt Burgess, and their exhibition is currently on display at the Urban Cow Gallery (upstairs, Frome Street city) throughout the month of April. 'Dividing Lines' presents exquisite works in glass; the blown and cast glass works in Dividing Lines exhibition differ aesthetically and formally but connect with each other through the concepts of interaction and the human condition.

The Arts Industry Council of SA have announced their opening salvo for the year, and what a absolute beauty it is too! 'The Idea Of Festivals' is a forum from 4.30-6pm on Thurs 3 April at the Mercury Cinema, MRC. Featured speakers are Christie Anthoney (Director, Adelaide Fringe), Conny Wilson (General Manager, SALA Festival), Daniel Clarke (Artistic Director, Feast Festival), Douglas Gautier (CEO & Artistic Director, Adelaide Festival Centre), Dr Robert Phiddian (Chair, 2009 Adelaide Festival of Ideas Advisory Committee), Jason Cross (Artistic Director, ASSITEJ World Congress and Performing Arts Festival), Katrina Sedgwick (Festival Director, Adelaide Film Festival), Paul Grabowski (Artistic Director, Adelaide Festival 2010), Peter Tregilgas (Executive Director, Arts Access SA Inc & High Beam Global) and Rick Hosking (Chair, 2008 Adelaide Writers' Week Advisory Committee). Should be a cracking event.

In the washup to the Fringe Festival, Puffio almost forgot to heap the praise on the Holden Street Theatre complex and its boss, Martha Lott, for their convincing win in being chosen 'Best Performing Arts Venue.' Congrats to all!

The Theatre Guild at Adelaide Uni has come up with something a little different: 'page #1, Scene#1 ... the end and other stories' is a collaboration between the Theatre Guild and the University's Creative Writing discipline, and the results have been brought to the stage as playlets by Director Michael Allen. There are three performances only, from Thurs 10 to Sat 12 April in the Little Theatre.

'Time & Texture' is the exhibition presented by The Cuttlefish Coalition, a group of Adelaide artists who have been carving dried cuttlefish bones and then casting their designs in bronze for more than 5 years. It seems like a thankless task, but perhaps they're happy in their work. Where did they come by such a task? Whence the many cuttlefish bones they would require? One supposes the answers can be gleaned at the TinCat Cafe Upstairs Gallery (Rundle Street, Kent Town), the exhibition now being on until Sun 20 April.
