MotoGP 07
Capcom/SCEE
PS2
What can you really say about 'MotoGP O7?' If you're reading this review, you are no doubt a MotoGP nut. Otherwise, why would you be interested? Writing about racing games is the reviewing equivalent of preaching to the choir. Having said that there is nothing of consequence to disparage about this version. The menu functions are only competently done, but other than that the game is excellent, in particular the race engine which is tough and challenging.
If you just want some fun, put the game on the easier settings and glide around the corners with ease. For the expert, the simulation level offers a fantastic challenge. Any amount of throttle with the bike sideways will send your rear wheel out from under you. Even without the G forces and weight of the bike the simulation settings give you a whole new admiration for superstars like Casey Stoner. One of the best cases in point is the infamous "Corkscrew" at Luguna Seca; when you reach the top of the hill you can actually feel the bike being pulled in two directions. Being able to race one of these 800cc behemoths is not something that most mortals could hope to ever attempt. So for anyone who has ever dreamed of a life on 2-wheels with gasoline in the hair, this game offers an excellent and realistic sports sim.
The game has four difficulty levels but the realistic physics of the game will see most gamers unable to go past the second, or medium, level. This begs the question - who the hell were the top two levels intended for? Some will accuse the game of being too challenging. But for mine a game like this should be designed to be appreciated even by industry experts. The best thing about this game is the Challenges section which totally makes up for the realistic physics engine.
The challenges actually constitute a tutorial series which will make you a better rider in no time at all. Some realism sims really leave you to your own devices. Unfortunately for most of us a little guidance is more than appreciated. This is where the gang at Capcom deserve special praise. Without this feature it would just be a good game for fans. The fact that they've made it accesible for anyone elevates 'MotoGP 07' to being a great game for any racing fan.
