Mickey D
Excess
Rhino Room
Until Sat 15 March
Mickey D was awarded Best Show of Adelaide Fringe 07, and in conjunction with being a home-grown lad, no doubt his Fringe 08 season will also be mighty successful.
I caught a few minutes of Adelaide's favourite comedy expat at a Fringe collaboration at the Gov last year and was keen to see if his relaxed manner and entertaining rapport with the audience was merely a product of particularly good night.
I got the impression from Mickey's introduction, that this was going to be your run-of-the-mill, slay all things Victorian kind of night, however, 'Excess' was more focussed on the man himself and his supposed demise since we saw him last. He claims his drinking problem is out of control and everyone around him, mainly his parents, have gone completely nuts. He plays this card extremely well, with animated outbursts full of spluttering, drunken madness.
The atmosphere of Mickey D's shows would be reason enough to buy a ticket. Despite his popularity, I started to feel like the only person in the room who wasn't either a direct relation or at most, a friend of a friend. It's an excellent vibe; the evening is full of heckling from old school mates, banter with his hilarious parents, and everyone else just being stoked to be a part of it.
There are so many reasons to support Mickey D. I'm a huge sceptic of comedy, finding that if often lets me down, but Mickey finds a way to make it personal, outrageous and accessible to everyone.
