Puff 'n Stuff

It's going to be a busy week in Adelaide, with the Fringe 0pening Parade, the Clipsal concerts, and more gigs than you can poke a stick at coming up in the next seven days.

The Fringe Opening Night Party takes place on Fri 22 Feb with acts like The Presets, Dappled Cities Fly and I Heart Hiroshima taking to the stage as the party moves through Rymill Park, Rundle St, East Tce and Rundle Park.

R you could go and visit highly-rated local combo We Grow Up at their CD launch for 'Night Kitchen'. They'll be playing with The Honey Pies at the Jade Monkey, also on Fri 22 Feb.

At the other end of town, Sonic Youth will be playing at the Fowler's Live Courtyard, performing their classic 'Daydream Nation' album in its entirety, while they're supported by the legendary Scientists in their swamp rock/ blues incarnation.

If that doesn't take your fancy, you could always mosey on further East to see Powderfinger playing the Clipsal after race concert on Fri 22 Feb. Following on from them on Sun 24 Feb will be the legendary Carlos Santana, conjuring up all kinds of black magic with his trusty guitar.

But apparently one acclaimed Latin guitarist isn't enough for you, Adelaide? Then prepare yourselves for the return of Josˇ Feliciano, the blind virtuoso who has been amazing audiences for more than four decades. He'll be appearing with his acoustic guitar on Thurs 17 April at the Governor Hindmarsh.

Funk and roots acts The NEO haven't been sponsored by an energy drink company yet, but it isn't for want of trying at their incredible wild live shows. Any CEOs on the lookout for a band to promote their wares are well advised to see them on Fri 22 Feb at the Crown & Sceptre, or at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sat 23 Feb or Sun 24 Feb.

The Mountain Goats have been pretty regular visitors to our fine city for some years now, so it comes as no surprise that they wish to celebrate their latest album, as usual full of John Darnielle's florid imagery and brutal honesty, with another Australian tour. Bass player Peter Hughes will once again join John onstage, as well as drummer Jon Wurster, who will be a first time Australian visitor at the all ages show at Fowler's Live on Sun 6 April.

The only season Puff ever wants to turn to is summer, but not everyone enjoys overloading their air-conditioner, going to sleep when it's still light outside and picking the sand out of their hair for three days after a beach trip. In fact, Laura Hill is going so far as to celebrate the End Of Summer on Fri 7 Mar at the Marion Cultural Centre. As well as live sets from Ms. Hill and Raw Ether, there will be a screening of classic surf movie 'The Endless Summer 2' and surf boards and art on display.

Bob Log III gets called a lot of things - usually it's 'stark, raving mad' or 'completely potty'. But occasionally 'mad genius' pops up, and it's not an entirely unjustified claim as the one man blues explosion in a shiny blue spacesuit does put on a hell of a live show, even if nobody quite understands what's happening. Catch him at Jive on Fri 29 Feb with support from King Daddy and chances are, you'll never forget it, for good or ill.

O'Balls have become an endangered species in the post-VSU era, but Adelaide Uni still fly the flag proudly, and on Sat 15 Mar from 2:30, they will once again be pulling out all stops to bring a big show to all, students or not. Jebediah will be headlining, with help on the day from The Cops, British India and Adelaide's own City Riots and Tyger Tyger. But it's not just about rock, and the faculty of hip-hop are happy to present Koolism, Mind Over Matter and a DJ battle between the last two Australian DMC Champions (who hold five titles between them), Staen One and Perplex.

Henry Manetta and his ecstatic Tripsters return to the Adelaide Fringe Festival for the third year in a row, this time as part of the Black Note Jazz Club. It'll all be happening for one show only on Fri 29 Feb at the Dom Polski Centre... Melbourne singer-songwriter Brent Parlan will be playing a one off Adelaide show at the Wheatsheaf hotel on Sun 30 Mar...Melbourne trio My Disco will launch their latest opus, 'Paradise', with a run of national dates including an appearance at Rocket Bar on Fri 4 April.

Make sure that all your affairs are in order and you can claim a justly lived life by Tues 8 April, because Southern hard rock lords Maylene And The Sons of Disaster are set to bring divine justice to Fowler's live on that date, and you don't want to be caught on their wrong side.

Melbourne rock trio Tin Alley don't mind setting their sights high, and they claim to deliver a unique sound that the Australian rock music scene has been calling for. If you're the one who's been leaving all the messages, it would behoove you to catch them at the Fuse Festival Ignition Showcase at the Governor Hindmarsh on Thurs 28 Feb.

Sure, there'll be plenty of radio and television hosts chattering incessantly for the next few weeks, but if you want to remember why the Fringe Festival got started in the first place, venture down to The Garage International at the rear of 176 Tynte St, North Adelaide between Thurs 28 Feb and Sat 1 March. There you'll be privy to an hour long journey onto and across a square metre of stage. It's narrated and sung by Dave Graney accompanied by Clare Moore on vibraphone and Mark Fitzgibbon on piano, and the whole performance will be conducted for the first time ever with a microphone.

Keb' Mo' draws on the old-fashioned blues of artists from the Mississippi Delta, but he updates it all with plenty of modern touches and he'll be showing off that style on Wed 13 March at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel... East Coast hardcore pioneers Madball play at Fowler's Live on Sun 9 Feb with Boston's Death Before Dishonor for a night of very heavy entertainment.... It's a long time since bagpipes have graced the stage of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, but on Thurs 17 April dreadlock-sporting Korn frontman Jonathan Davis will make sure they get a rousing return.

Sydney hipsters Van She have supported a pretty tasty line-up of Australian and international artists since the release of their eponymous EP, among them Vanilla Ice at the recent Summer Party. Now they've got anew single that they're hoping will be bigger than Ninja Rap , so they're taking the Cat & The Eye show on tour, hitting the recently refurbished Ed Castle on Sun 16 March.

Former Australian idol finalist Lisa Mitchell will be bringing a mix of acoustic folk to anyone who'll listen n Sat 23 Feb at Jive Barwith Leroy Lee and Ashleigh Mannix.

US Metalcore warriors The Devil Wears Prada may be light on experience with an average age of 19, but they're heavy on synth-laden dual vocal attacks and they'll bring all the vigour of youth to Fowler's Live on Sun 1 June.

When you want righteous anger in the form a tirade at the state of the world, Hank's your man and no-one else will do. And there's a lot to be angry about at the moment, so Henry Rollins will bring his very own brand of opinionated editorialising and storytelling in his spoken word show at the Norwood Conert Hall on Thurs 17 April.

Long suffering Velvet Revolver fans have been dealt yet another blow, with the band cancelling the dates on their forthcoming Australian tour after singer Scott Weiland checked into re-re-rehab. Unlike last time, there are no plans to reschedule the dates and refunds are available at the point of purchase.

Tue 26 Feb sees indie rock luminaries Interpol playing a highly anticipated show at the Thebarton Theatre, and there are still a few tickets left for the night.

The Garden Of Unearthly Delights is now open for business, and there's plenty going on every night, but none of the shows will be bigger than the Future Music Festival. Taking place on Adelaide Cup public holiday on Mon 10 March, it will be headlined by no less than The Chemical Brothers, who will be ably supported by the likes of Roger Sanchez, John Digweed, Aesop Rock, Kid Koala, Datarock and Shapeshifters.

And there are only a few weeks to go until its cross town rival, the sumptuous Persian Garden, opens its doors for 2008. It will be open every night from Fri 29 Feb until Sat Mar 5 excluding Mondays and Tuesdays, and plenty of live acts and DJs playing over the next few weeks, including Norman Jay, Crazy P, Nickodemus, DBR and Billy Cobham.

After returning from a European tour, locals Aviator Lane are currently recording their debut full-length album. To help them in the task, they've recruited a live drummer in the form of Tom Smeets, and their first gig with this new line-up will be the Laneway Festival in the Fowler's Live Courtyard on Sat 23 Feb, when they will kick off proceedings at 11:15 am.

Speaking of that rather impressive festival, set times have been released for the day of fun, and by checking out the website at www.lanewayfestival.com.au. There, you'll be able to find out exactly when Feist, Okkervil River, Broken Social Scene, Gotye, The Presets, Stars, Manchester Orchestra and the multitude of other acts are playing.

With the last weekend of Summer almost upon us, Angelik certainly have no intention of letting the turning of the season pass by unnoticed, so they've lined up a couple of rocking shows to bow out in style. Glenelg's Jetty hotel will host them on Sat 23 Feb along with Is This Art? and Blame Johnny, while the strange pagan ritual that is the Skate Of Origin takes place on Sun 24 Feb at the Adelaide Showgrounds. An all-girl roller derby riot between SA and Victoria, it will be soundtracked by Angelik and Ricochet Pete.

After an absence of a year, the Hand Picked music festival has been reborn and will be held in Loxton again this year, albeit a little more low key. Headlining the event will be veteran rockers Rose Tattoo, while Adelaide band Legless and Australian Idol finalist Holly Weinert, from Mildura, feature on the bill that also includes a number of local bands like Terminal Thrill, Sector 7G, Atlas Nowhere and Riverland Battle of the Bands winners Overdrive.

After the announcement of Duran Duran and Smashing Pumpkins local shows (at the Entertainment Centre on Tue 1 and Wed 2 April), comes the news that French dreamboats Air will also be coming to Adelaide to perform sideshows from their V Festival dates. They'll be headlining the Thebarton Theatre on Thurs 3 April with a 3-piece band joining Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel onstage.

The fourth and final announcement of artists for the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay has been announced. Taking place over the Easter long weekend from Thurs 20 - Monday 24 March, the larger site at Belongil Fields will now host folk-rock-pop duo Sugarland, blind American soul/ blues artist Raul Mid—n, dreadlocked singer songwriter Newton Faulkner, Gotye's side project The Basics, reggae/ rock/ punk and soul band Bedouin Soundclash and plenty of others who will be joining already announced artists like John Fogerty, Buddy Guy, Sinead O'Connor, Ray Davies, Patty Griffin, Wilco and Maceo Parker.

Famed glam metal lovehunters Whitesnake are sure to put on one hell of a show on Mon 31 March when they invade the Thebby Theatre for a licensed all ages show.

The Foo Fighters tickets sold out a mite too quick for many Adelaide fans, so it's with a glad heart that Puff can the release of extra tickets, to go on sale this Fri 22 Feb at 9am. The show itself will still take place on Thurs 24 April at The Entertainment Centre, and The Mess Hall and Kaki King have been announced as supports.

It will be a night to celebrate for heavy metal's new brigade when Welsh metalcore act- Bullet For My Valentine join up with Southern Californians Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu for a show on Thurs 8 May at the Thebarton Theatre.

It's tough to make a living in the world of rock, but local lads The Hot Lies have managed to make good in this 'Sink Or Sin' world, and they're flaunting it with a massive national tour of that name that will take in 22 dates over almost two months. Of course they'll be showing their hometown some love on Thu 20 Mar when they play at Live On Light Square (formerly Night Train) with Angela's Dish and Calling All Cars.

The Dropkick Murphys are Boston Irish through and through, but the beloved punk band are definitely no joke and they'll be bringing their A game when they come a-knocking at Live On Light Square (formerly Night Train) on Fri 30 May. But it won't be all drunken sing-alongs on the night, as musical activisst and New York Hardcore mainstays Sick Of It All will also be jumping on the bill for anight of punk and hardcore entertainment.

Melbourne indie pop quintet Summer Cats are launching their 'Scratching Post' EP (which writer Lenin Simos reviewed in this very edition) at the Exeter on Rundle St on Sat 23 Feb with support from Megafauna.

Okay, it's Fringe/Festival/WOMAD/Clipsal/Adelaide Cup/other stuff time in Adelaide, so there's no excuse:
