Puff n' Stuff
With supergroups such as The Police and Led Zeppelin re-forming like there's no tomorrow, it was inevitable that Adelaide's former kings of ridicu-rock Mothdust would eventually heed the calls and put on their own reformation show. They will return to their old haunt, The Crown & Anchor, with Tracer and Raw Ether to rock harder than the proverbial for all their loyal fans.
At the other end of the spectrum, Adelaide quartet The Open Season are set to hang up their guitar straps after four years of playing together. They have two EPs and comparisons to acts like Gyroscope, Motion City Soundtrack and New Found Glory to show for their troubles, but they'd like to leave fans with one last show to remember. So they will bid farewell with one last show at Fowler's Live on that rarest of dates, Fri 29 Feb.
Illicit Eve invite you to step 'Into The Woods' on their new album that brings together an assortment of lyrically creative rock sounds with ambient industrial textures. The duo's second release is ready to be launched on the public at large, and they want it to be an event to remember. Adding to the powerful rock and rhythmic pop as they launch the album on Sat 16 Feb will be Blow Up Betty and The New Vague.
Local punk rock lasses Legless aren't known for their subtlety, but they're sure to be at their diplomatic best as they head to East Timor to play for the Australian Defence Forces. Appropriately enough, their new album 'Finding Mr. Perfect' is also just about ready and they'll be launching it upon their return with a gig at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Thurs 13 Mar, with a performance before that as part of the Fuse Ignition Showcase with Fighterpilot and Enola's Secret on Thurs 28 Feb at Enigma Bar.
Grammy Award winning rapper Eve B is set to blow plenty of minds as she prepares for her first ever Australian tour. The former Rough Rider will bring plenty of style to the stage of the Thebarton Theatre when she plays on Wed 2 April.
Puff was very, very angry when the poor Adelaide crowds for last year's Mini-V Festival meant that the event would give us a miss this time around. Fortunately, the fury of a festival scorned is not what it's cracked up to be, and the organisers have relented to the extent that some of the headliners will indeed be making the trip over. The Smashing Pumpkins will headline their own show at The Entertainment Centre on Wed 2 April supported by Queens Of The Stone Age, while the original hair band Duran Duran, play the same venue one night earlier on Tues 1 April.
When you're in a genre like dancehall, you have to quick to adapt to any new trends just to stay afloat, but the South Rakkas Crew still manage to rank as one of the most innovative acts in the genre. Mixing dancehall with everything from Miami bass to electro, they'll bring the ruckus to The Garden of Unearthly Delights' SoCo Cargo on Thurs 6 Mar.
Congratulations are certainly due to Mr. John Woodruff, who was awarded the Medal of Order of Australia for his contribution to the music industry in the recent Australia Day honours. Involved in the business for 30 years, almost of all that time spent as a manager, Woodruff worked with The Angels, Cold Chisel, Icehouse, The Baby Animals and Savage Garden among others.
Lior's first album 'Autumn Flow' surprised everybody with its success and longevity, but he's hoping that his follow up, 'Corner Of An Endless Road' will do even better. Fittingly, given the title of the new album, he'll be hitting the road for quite some time, including a stop in Adelaide on Friday 4 April at The Norwood Town Hall.
The Bellrays blitzed Australia when they toured last year, and they're following it up with another lightning visit in support of their new album, the somewhat racily titled 'Hard Sweet And Sticky'. Mixing soul, hard rock funk and anything else that takes their fancy, they're set to blow out the speakers at Fowler's Live on Wed 19 Mar.
Another band that played some incredible live shows last year, Helmet, are also returning with their machine-like grooves and soul crunching rhythm section. Fresh from touring with Guns'n'Roses, Page Hamilton and his cohorts will blast into Fowler's Live on Sun 4 May.
Puff loves surprises, and the more mysterious the better. So when The What 4 mentioned that they'd be featuring a debut from a surprise guest whose presence has been highly anticipated on the local live circuit, a pair of news column ears pricked right up. Also accompanying The What 4's contemporary psychedelia on the night will be Adelaide's favourite surf band Slingshot Dragster.
The second most famous fro to be discovered by 'Australian Idol', Bobby Flynn has a new album and will be playing with his band The Omega Three at Flinders Uni on Fri 14 Mar... Sonic Youth will perform their classic album 'Daydream Nation' in its entirety when they play in the Fowler's Live Courtyard on Fri 22 Feb, supported by Australian legends The Scientists, who will perform 'Blood Red River'.
Local siblings BrotherSister are finally ready to bring their new album 'The WunderTales' to the public at large, and they've chosen the auspicious date of Fri 15 February for the occasion, with help from Mr. Wednesday and Radio Spectacular.
Band names are important, as any aspiring musician will tell you - they should be catchy, but also impart a little information about the band. And if there's a hilarious misspelt word, all the better. So the Melbourne Ukelele Kollective already had a head start on everyone else before their nationally televised appearance on 'Spicks And Specks', and the twenty-odd players (who bring ska, gypsy, jazz, rock, disco and blues elements to the band's performances) have parlayed that success into not one but two Fringe appearances, at the Governor Hindmarsh Hotel on Sat 1 and Sun 2 Mar.
Horse The Band didn't spend quite so long coming up with their name. Or maybe it's a brilliant post-modern commentary on the artificiality of naming things and the transitory nature of those monikers. Or something. Either way, they're not travelling on the lecture circuit, but bringing their rough brand of hardcore to the Night Train entertainment Complex on Sat 8 Mar.
The John Woods Band had a pretty big day out at the showgrounds recently, but it's not all huge festivals and hobnobbing with the stars for the local roots act. After laying down the tracks fro their upcoming album, they'll be headlining their own show at Jive on Sat 15 Jan with special guests Loren Kate and Paya.
It's a while since Puff has had a friendly postcard from Millencollin, but the Swedish pop punkers have a pretty good reason, as they've been in the lab putting the finishing touches on their latest album, 'Machine 15'. Because they're such loveable scamps, Puff forgave them immediately, which is most fortunate as they'll be visiting Adelaide soon, playing at HQ on Thu 3 April.
The Skybombers will bring their mix of grunge, garage pop and good old fashioned rock and roll to Enigma Bar on Sun 10 Feb, and they're showing love to the country to with a show at the Loxton Hotel on Sat 9 Feb... Before recording their debut album, Brisbane rockers Dead Letter Circus want to do one more round of the country to really get their art down. They'll be playing with Soft White Machine at Jive on Sun 24 Feb
As the Fringe closes in, Moonlight Cinema's time in Botanic Park is almost up, but before it all packs up for another year, there are a few pictures left to play. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis provided the soundtrack to 'The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford', while more music legends than Puff can remember get screen time in the classic 'The Blues Brothers'. As well as being one of the funniest films of all time, 'Withnail And I' was co-produced by the late George Harrison, and there are plenty of other movies playing before the season ends on Sun 17 Feb.
With plenty of side projects floating around at Fringe time, all the members of The Bird will be in Adelaide anyway, so they figured they may as well make the most of it and play a gig together. Makes sense, really, and the folks at the Adelaide Festival Centre thought so too, so they've included the band in their Trans:Mission series. Expect a night of spontaneous dance floor beats, electro synth lines and dubbed craziness on Fri 22 Feb at the Festival Centre's Piano Bar.
While flipping through the diary for April, Puff came across an entry that read 'Flogging Molly', which sounds like an awful lot of fun. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a listing for the band of that name. but fortunately the energetic Hibernian punk rockers will be sure to provide plenty of their own entertainment when they play at the Night Train Entertainment Complex on Wed 9 Apr.
Melborne rockers Monkeybone are pretty chuffed at the moment, because they've secured the support slot for the national Velvet Revolver tours and are about to go trekking around the country. A four-piece powerhouse of rock and tasty grooves, they'll be warming up for the International supergroup on Wed 20 Feb at the Thebarton Theatre.
Local garage punksters All Flight Crew Are Dead are exceedingly pleased to announce the appointment of new skinsman Davey Sharpe, who joins them at all live shows from now on, commencing on Sat 16 Feb when they play with Dead Popes Of The Vatican, Booster and High Stakes at the Producer's Bar.
Former Frente member Angie Hart has had quite a change of pace since she returned to her hometown of Melbourne in 2005 to work as a solo artist. After a highly successful return to the recording business, she's decided to stick with the solo format and will bring her sweet, intelligent pop to The Wheatsheaf Hotel on Fri 28 Mar.
Little Birdy are about to head back into the recording studio to record the follow up to 'Holywood', but before they do, they will embark on a run of their only Club shows for 2008. But that's not all - because it will be the only taste of the band that fans get for some time, they will be adding value by opening the show with a solo set from frontwoman Katy Steele performing past favourites and a few tasters off the new album. But wait, there's more - every ticket purchased will include a free CD with remixes by The Presets, Paul Mac and Pnau. Catch both sets on Sun 16 Mar at Jive, where they will be supported by Sugar Army.
ScorcherFest will this year take place on Sun 16 Mar at Flinders University, and bands interested in participating are welcome to register their interest by e-mailing andrewcooper369@gmail.com.
It seems that it's the season for punk stalwarts, and joining the crop that have already announced they will be touring in the next few months are the Dropkick Murphys and Sick Of It All. One act blends East Coast hardcore with whiskey-scorched Celtic rock and the other still proudly waves the flag for New York hardcore with a social message, but the two much-loved bands will form like Voltron for a national tour that hits Adelaide on Fri 30 May, stopping at the night Train Entertainment Complex.
Infected Mushroom bring the 'Legend Of The Black Shawarma Tour' to the Channel Complex on Tue 26 Feb, and while the title doesn't make a whole lot of sense to Puff, here's hoping the stage show fusing psy-trance, rock and electronics will.
The gates of The Jolly Miller have been flung open, and the pedigree steeds of local power-soul outfit Double Wammy will be shredding the turf on the golden paddock of the beer garden for a month of Sundays beginning on 10 Feb.
Don't you know they're loco? Cypress Hill will bring a list of hits longer than your arm when they play at HQ on Thurs 14 Feb, and they'll be supported by Pharoahe Monch bringing more fire than Godzilla as the two take a diversion form the Good Vibrations Festival.
No excuses!
