DJ Vadim
The Soundcatcher Extras
BBE/ Inertia

If ever one was to name some of the most influential, talented and unique hip-hop DJs in the world today, perhaps in history, do not be surprised to hear DJ Vadim mentioned. This Russian born, London based DJ has been at the forefront of hip-hop beats for many years, and this has culminated in the creation of his critically acclaimed album, 2007's 'The Soundcatcher'. This album was praised for its Kingston sound influence, and how it broke away from Vadim's usual foray into abstract and complex sounds. However, it still left listeners without any doubt that it was uniquely Vadim.

'The Soundcatcher Extras' is one way a complementary album to its predecessor. It features remixes from the original album that only featured in the vinyl release, as well as the two successful remixes that won the online remix competition. Kill Kill Kill gets a few makeovers: one a grimey number thanks to Waxos, a Jr Eakee dubby reggae mix, and a polar groove house mix by Deface Groove. Other remixes include a Timberland-esque mix of Like The Wind, and Aaron Jerome's broken beat funk mix of Got To Rock.

However, the album also features newer material that Vadim seem to have managed to find time to do during his hectic Soundcatcher Tour. These include the street Latin laced track of Countdown featuring Rashan Ahmad, the smooth funked up Saskatoon featuring the Young Blood Brass Band, and my personal highlight, Quand Vient La Nuit featuring Vadim's contemporaries from hip-hop supergroup One Self.

Vadim has once again continued his good form with another brilliant release. And don't be perturbed that it is an "Extras" album - this can definitely hold its own along side its bigger brother.
