Puff 'n Stuff

The Wainwright clan just can't seem to get enough of Australia, and the elder statesman of the family is next up to make the trip out here. After four decades of making music, last years 'Strange Weirdos' marked a return to form for the candid songwriter known as Loudon Wainwright III, and now he's returning to Australia to play at the Governor Hindmarsh on Wed 26 Mar.

Horsell Common exist for one reason, and one reason only: to rock. After years of touring, last year's 'The Rescue' was their first album, and they don't want to let it slide by in a hurry, so they've got a national headlining tour slated to hit Fowler's Live on Fri 4 Apr with support form Trial Kennedy and Adelaide's own Mere Theory plus an as yet to be announced local band.

Australia Day beckons, and you'll have plenty of people telling what a good patriotic Aussie should do, but don't believe them for a moment unless they tell you to go out and listen to some live music. There's plenty on offer, and if you can't find something in this lot to amuse you, you're not looking hard enough...Lizard Lounge hosts Angelik, Star Ten Hash, Cock and The What 4 as they turn the dials up to eleven, but there's stiff competition for the most rocking Australia Day...Those proud supporters of The Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Coins, The Toss are playing with Toxic Shock and Fear And Loathing at the Squatter's Arms...The Original Angels Band have recruited Mojo Squeeze and Captains Of Industry to join their Australia Day party, and they'll be bringing the whole circus to Channel, at 120 Gouger St...It doesn't get much more Aussie than an AC/DC tribute show, and that's exactly what High Voltage will deliver at The Gov, inviting flag bearers from all over town to celebrate their 20th year of hard rocking. Necromancy has a Saturday Night special featuring interstate guest DJ Slaughter playing goth rock andDJ Cenobite giving the love to Australian artists, alongside DJs Empuza, Azureu and Pandemic at Enigma Bar...And lastly, Rhino Room making sure that Dubstep gets a play on our national day. DJ Distance might be British, but Australian producer Spheriz will be there to make sure that there's some local flavour, alongside Adelaide selectors Audio Opticon, Macro and Jayar at Rhino Room.

Shihad are back! The Kiwi expats have a tour coming your way, with support from Horsell Common and The Galvatrons, and if you can find your town marked on the map, chances are they're playing there. Their new album isn't out until April, but you can catch a sneak preview at Mannum's Pretoria hotel on Sat 1 Mar or Fowler's Live on Sun 2 Mar.

Last year, Birth Glow met a great bunch of French lo-fi sorts called Ladybird at a festival in New Zealand, and they liked them so much that they've invited them to Adelaide, so that everyone can finally see this band they've been raving about. Catch them at an all ages show with Line Honours and Swords at Urtext Studios. That's level 2, 14 Grenfell St, kids.

It's not every day that you have the opportunity to witness a Native American variety show, but Minnesota based Lakota family The Fast Horses will present Adelaide audiences with the chance to do that not once, but twice. Their show focuses on the evolution of native American music and dance, and incorporates comedy, juggling, storytelling and plenty more thrown in to keep things interesting, and can be seen at The Governor Hindmarsh on Thurs 31 Jan and Fri 1 Feb.

Nobody can replicate the voice of Jeff Buckley, but at an intimate cabaret style tribute to the man, you'll find a performance that tries to be as authentic as possible, both to recorded material and to his exploratory, spontaneous and improvisational live. Taking place at the Jade Monkey on Fri 8 Feb, it's definitely one for the fans.

The JB Seed Grant Program has announced their categories for funding in 2008, with 25 new applicants to be awarded places in the workshop this year. In one of the biggest changes for 2008, following the success of the indigenous hip hop recording, JB Seed will now broaden the category to include all music genres.

Punk stalwarts Pennywise are turning 18 this year, and to celebrate their doing what every American does at that age - going on a road trip to a country where they're of legal age. But instead of heading south of the border, they've decided to recruit fellow punkers Sum 41 (who Puff thinks may have some members over 18) and The Vandals and Bowling For Soup for one hell of a celebration at the Thebarton Theatre on Mon 14 Apr.

Warsaw Flowers kick start the new year with a show at the Duke Of York, playing alongside Emily Smart and The Clever Girls... West Australian upstarts Sugar Army are playing at Rocket Bar on Fri 7 Mar...Illicit Eve have changed form a rock trio into a rock duo, and they launch their new CD, 'Into The Woods' with Blow Up Betty and The New Vague. Jive on Sun 16 Feb.

Barry Mcguire (yes, he of Eve Of Destruction fame) has a new show, 'Trippin' The Sixties' that combines his songs and stories of (you guessed it) The Sixties at the Gov on Wed 13 Feb, alongside special guest Terry Talbot.

In the middle of Botanic Park, Moonlight Cinemas are having a bit of a nostalgia trip over the next fortnight, with plenty of old favourites getting a run. Among the familiar titles you'll find are Edward Scissorhands (Thurs 24 Jan), Muriel's Wedding (Fri 25 Jan), Singing In The Rain (Tue 29 Jan) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Wed 30 Jan).

So you can't make it all the way out to the Barossa or Eden valleys, but you still fancy a drop of plonk? Then Cellar Door Sessions is for you, an outdoor wine tasting event in Rymill park with stalls from wineries and restaurants, a beanbag filled chill-out zone and it's all soundtracked by Latin kings Hugo Salcedo & His TNT and Tropico on Sat Feb 9.

While the AFL head honchos may be flip-flopping and wringing their collective hands as they try to come up with a way to make State Of Origin earn them a hefty paypacket, the go get 'em types from Roller Derby are picking up the slack with Skate of Origin 2008, Australia's first ever interstate roller derby bout. The historic all-girl roller riot between SA and Victoria will happen at the Adelaide Showground's Jubilee Pavilion on Sun 24 Feb from 3 pm, with local bands Angelik and Ricochet Pete there to witness the carnage.

Adelaide siblings Dante and Xavia Nou intertwine melodic acoustic instruments and electronic sounds and beats as BrotherSister, and they're just getting ready to put out their second, self-produced full-length, 'The Wunder Tales'. 2 years in the making, they'll reveal their hard work to the world on Fri 15 Feb at the Jade Monkey with a full band and strings accompanying them.

Jens Lekman's certainly popular around these here parts, with a few writer's thinking his 2007 album 'Night Falls Over Kortedala' was pretty darn smashing. So they're excited, and you will be too, when you find out that the charming Swedish storyteller is bringing his six-piece band to Rocket Bar on Thurs 6 Mar.

The first St. Jerome's Laneway Festival in Adelaide seemed like a pretty good reason to celebrate, and then they announced the bands that were playing, and things got even better. Now, with the second announcement, Puff's cup runneth over as Stars, The Manchester Orchestra, Damn Arms, Darren Hanlon, The Vasco Era and The Redsunband join locals Aviator Lane, Lady Strangelove, Leader Cheetah and no Through Road. And that's not all -there are still more live acts to come, plus DJs and the Pulic Bazaar. How they'll fit it all into one day is beyond Puff, but it'll be interesting to see on Sat 23 Feb.

They couldn't find a way to fit American rappers Cool Kids on the bill, but fortunately the Garden Of Unearthly Delights has come to the rescue, allowing the duo to bring 88 back on Thurs 21 Feb.

Dallas Crane acoustic? You must be mad, said Puff upon first hearing the idea, but Dave Larkin and Pete Satchel have been provoking responses of an entirely different variety with their sellout shows around the nation. With the support of Jess McAvoy and Henry Wagons, they'll be ending their tour at the Electric Light Hotel on Fri 22 Feb, where they will be offering a limited edition tour only CD for sale to discerning patrons.

Raven Black Night claim to be 'the band what separated the men from the boys', and even if Puff thinks their grammar needs a little work, there's no reason to doubt them when they promise a night of true metal at Enigma Bar on Sat 2 Feb. Sugarcane Collins isn't on to do things by half measures, oh no! So when he decided that it was time to trek around Australia with his delta blues, he made sure to plan a hell of a trip, calling it the Daintree to Derwent tour. And though Adelaide isn't strictly on the East Coast, he's even made a detour to include a show at the Semaphore Worker's Club on Sun 3 Feb.

If you saw Vanilla Ice at the Summer Party, you witnessed the travesty that was his attempt to perform Hits From The Bong. But don't fear, word has got back to Cypress Hill, and they're now making plans to travel here and defend their honour to Adelaide crowds by performing that and all of their other hits at HQ on Thurs 14 Feb. Pharaohe Monch will be supporting, and if you ask really nicely, he might even cover Ice, Ice Baby.

After national supports for bands like The Used and My Chemical Romance in 2007, The Getaway Plan have grown tired of these international publicity seekers and decided that it's time to have a go at headlining themselves. Their debut album comes out in early February, and they decided that was as good an excuse as any, so they're hitting the road with Elora Danan and Stealing O'Neal to celebrate, blitzing Fowler's Live on Sun 16 Mar.

Call most bands Surf Rats and they'd be pretty unhappy, but Parkway Drive don't mind at all. In fact, the lads have chosen that name for their national tour, which sees them barreling into HQ with fellow Byron bay grommets 50 Lions on Sun 17 Feb.

Tiger Army have been to Australia once before, and those who saw them still speak of it in hushed tones. The band, on the other hand, are as loud as ever, and don't expect them to turn the psychobilly racket down just because you have a headache when they play at Fowler's Live on Wed 12 Mar.

Having spent time learning his craft through a succession of great bands -from Adelaide's Primitive Painters in the 1990s through to Puppethead, Resounder and now The Ashram Poets, guitarist Peter Long has finally unveiled what became a solo album, 'Midday Sun'. A shimmering classic of a guitar driven power pop album, Peter Long's 'Midday Sun' will form the focus of his live performances when he returns to Adelaide to play at The Wheatsheaf on Sat 2 and the Grace Emily Hotel on Sun 3 Feb.

A CD single to raise funds for the Amy Gillet Safe Foundation will be launched on Wednesday 24 Jan during the Tour Down Under celebrations at The Print Bin 147 King William Road. Recorded by Louise Messenger (The Fallen Saints), the song was penned by Nisa Schebella and other local songwriters in memory of Amy, who was killed while training with Australian women's cycling team in Germany in 2005. 'The Art Of Cycling' exhibition will also be launched at 7.30pm. For more info on the foundation, go to www.amygillett.org.au. The CD will be available from dB Magazine.
