Korn
Untitled
Virgin
Holy crap, I can't believe I actually just sat down and listened to this album in its entirety. I don't even know where to begin to comment on how poor this meagre attempt at a record is. It's these kinds of albums where you sit down and think: where did Korn go wrong? Who knows, and I think once fans hear this album they'll begin to think "who cares."
If there was a competition to see how much random shit you could throw into one song, 'Untitled' would take the cake. Now only a three-piece having lost their drummer, Korn have tried to adopt a Pink Floyd approach and bring in as many guest instruments in as possible. In fact, the tracks have so many different layers that you often can't even hear the band and instead are pummelled with a barrage of synth effects and keyboard sounds.
As far as the vocals go, expect to hear more of Jonathan Davis' high whiney singing style, which has never been a down-side as far as their previous song-writing history goes, but this time around it just drags on and on until you want to just throw your CD player against the wall in a fit of confusion and rage. Nothing seems to fit into place.
Korn need to realise that they were at their peak when they were a raw, scungy nu-metal band, and gave the kids something they could relate to. They need to get out of this mindset that because they sold a few records that they can create some sort of musical masterpiece by getting as many musicians on stage to help them out. This isn't 'Phantom Of The Opera'. I'd rather be shot in the foot than have to listen to this again.
Brad Holland.
