Carpathian

"To be really honest, I have seriously lost count of how many shows we have done this year. It's well over a hundred, I'm positive of that, but I definitely can't give you and exact number. On the European tour alone we did with [Massachusetts based mosh-core band ] On Broken Wings and Parkway Drive we played 45 shows in a month an a half, so basically a show a day. It really never ends, but we love it and we have had some amazing experiences through touring," Carpathian vocalist Marty Kirby explains.

Melbourne hardcore act Carpathian certainly deserves a great deal of admiration, recognition and respect for being one of the hardest working bands in Australia. With endless touring schedules which cause the band to live most of their lives inside the Tarago in which they often travel around adventuring and performing, it is of no surprise that the band have had little time to focus on writing the follow up record to their highly successful debut 'Nothing To Lose'.

"I was actually writing music before this interview for the new album," Kirby tells me. "I'm doing a lot of it on my own at the moment, like guitars, bass and vocals because the other guys all work proper jobs so they don't really have the time or availability. The writing process kind of stagnates every now and then because of the touring, but whenever we get time off I try and get stuck into it, but I'm doing my head in at the same time."

This quintet has certainly faced plenty of trials and tribulations when it comes to their line-up. Although solidified now, the band has had a number of member changes, including Kirby himself once moving from the front-man position to guitarist, and ex I Killed The Prom Queen vocalist Michael Crafter taking the singer position. The current line-up which now features another important figure in Australian hardcore, Ben Coyte (formerly of internationally recognised band Day Of Contempt), on guitar is possibly the strongest yet. And as Kirby informs me, it brings about a new energy into the band and their song-writing strategies.

"I think a large part of the reason for the line-up changes is probably just how hard we work and tour as a band. This last year has been crazy, and a lot of the guys have really enjoyed it, but then sometimes they would kind of get down on it all... It's a bummer I don't get to see them much anymore, because they were my best friends. But I mean after Europe, that's all that some of the guys wanted to achieve from the band, they had toured Australia many times so they were happy at leaving it there. The new line-up is cool now, everyone's on the same path as well as being 'straight edge' and vegetarian, which totally helps us all click more."

With only a short amount of time at home before the touring begins again, Carpathian are about to embark on the Resist tour once again this year with a new 7-inch single entitled 'Wrecked' to be released and promoted throughout the tour. The quintet has also recently been added to possibly the biggest event in Australia in regards to punk, hardcore and metal music, The Soundwave Festival.

"We are really happy to be on the Resist tour again, it's a great tour and we are doing with our good friends [Byron Bay hardcore quintet] 50 Lions and [Sydney based post-hardcore band] Irrelevant who I have personally loved since I was like fifteen years old. We kind of promised ourselves that since its summer we will go to 'Wet-n-Wild' and stuff, and just enjoy the weather. I'm sure that will piss off Graham [Nixon, manager of Resist Records] though, because we'll be late to the shows," laughs Kirby.

"The addition to the Soundwave festival is a really cool thing for us, it's definitely going to be better than the Taste Of Chaos tour because I think we are a bit better suited to it, and I have always wanted to play something like Soundwave. The reason I started a band was because I saw Blink 182 play at Vans Warped tour years ago, and I just knew I really wanted to do something like that."
