Puff 'n Stuff

'It Won't Be Soon Before Long' might not have made much sense, but Maroon 5's second album still found plenty of eager fans, and they'll get a chance to see the band live both soon and before long. Supported by rising stars OneRepublic, Brandi Carlile and Ry Cumming, they will appear at the Entertainment Centre on Mon 31 March.

When the one and only Vanilla Ice snubbed our state for his upcoming tour it made Puff want to wax the chump like a candle. But putting him under pressure obviously spurred everyone's favourite fallen pop rapper and movie star to add an Adelaide show, so he'll be performing at the Summer Party Festival on Sat Jan 12. And here's a picture of the man known to his mother as Robert Van Winkle. Isn't he pretty?

On seeing the initial announcement, Puff made a bet the Soundwave organisers that they couldn't fit any more bands into one day, but with Alexisonfire, Infectious Grooves and City And Colour added to the bill, there's a little egg on a certain fortnightly news columns' face. Unfortunately, Coheed And Cambria and Ace Enders have had to pull out, but there are still plenty of other bands like The Offspring, Incubus, Motion City Soundtrack, Killswitch Engage, Carpathian and From Autumn To Ashes, to name just a few.

There are more previews than Cannes going on at this time of the year, but Puff has whittled the mighty list down to a manageable few. The Urban Guerilla's have a new CD '... And The Wind Brought Change' and Ken Stewart and David Robinson will be playing an acoustic gig, both solo and together, at Sarah's Cafˇ on Thurs 20 Dec... Local siblings BrotherSister will let crowds in on some sneak peeks of their new album 'The WunderTales', which will be released early next year, at the Wheatsheaf Hotel on Fri 21 Dec... From Hobart town, Dean Stevenson will be visiting Adelaide the very day this edition goes to print with his philosophical melodic rock, debuting tracks from his debut album 'In Time' at the Grace Emily on Wed 12 Dec, looking something like this.

Ah, Christmas - that magical time of year when the Puff family gets together to argue over who got the best present, fight each other for the best bits of the turkey, and eventually curl up for a nap after an overdose of tryptophan. And, of course, listen to Darren Hanlon, whose Christmas shows are becoming an annual tradition. He'll be performing in intimate solo mode with special guests at the Grace Emily on Sun 16 Dec.

It's been a busy year for local goth/alt. country types Brillig, and they'll be celebrating by hosting their annual Chirstmas show on Sat 15 Dec at the Grace Emily Hotel, with labelmates Dandelion Wine and touring buddy Tim Hudspith. Then, to cap things off, they're bringing their banjo, accordion, viola, 12-string and other assorted instruments to the Wheatsheaf Hotel, for a post-Christmas bash on Fri 28 Dec with Puff's old friend Andrew P Street & Cookie Baker.

Music doesn't get much more hardcore than Madball, and when they bring Boston's Death Before Dishonor with them for a run of Australian dates, you can be sure that things will get heavy. With the trinity of influence, longevity and an outstanding live reputation, Madball are true powers on the hardcore scene, and they'll be bringing the noise on Sun 9 March at Fowler's Live.

Inducted into the ARIA Hall OF Fame last year, the Divinyls are back to re-create the raw rock'n'roll that made them one of Australia's most successful bands throughout the 80s. They won't take no for an answer, so you'd better get along to the Thebby on Thurs Dec 20, with a free copy of their new single Don't Wanna Do This for everyone who goes along.

Roughriders Down Under could mean any of a million things, but Puff will resist the urge to make a joke about the title of their tour, because Me First And The Gimme Gimmes (sans Fat Mike) do enough wisecracking themselves. Bringing all the swagger from their most recent 'Love Their Country' album to our shores, they'll be rounding 'em up at HQ on Tue 22 Jan.

Local two piece garage rockers The Amcats have just recorded their debut EP with Matt Hills, and they're launching it on Fri 11 Jan at the Edinburgh Castle... Sidewalks feature former Central Deli Band Frontman Matt Hayward, and play at the Jade Monkey on Fri 14 Dec with Tyger, Tyger and Matt Banham... Jeanette Wormald will play Sunday Spectrum series at the Festival Centre, appearing at ArtSpace on Sun 23 Dec... The Cranka Christmas Show is Sat 22 Dec, and with a line up of Angelik, Backseat Romeos and Ricochet Pete, it's sure to be a cracker!

Puff remembers summer as a time when too much ska/punk is barely enough, and thought there's a solid wave of bands coming through, few are more qualified to declare proceedings open than Reel Big Fish. Catch the madness that they laughingly call a job when they play HQ on Thurs 13 Dec with Less Than Jake and Streetlight Manifesto.

All the festivals are getting into this trend of adding new acts, and the East coast Blues and Roots Festival is no exception, though there's plenty more than just Blues and Roots and this menu. A return to the festival's original outdoor site means there's more room than ever for bands, so the second announcement includes the original swamp rocker John Fogerty, jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour, acclaimed TV presenter Jools Holland & His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, rock'n'soul whirlwind The Bellrays, former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown, G. Love & Special Sauce, and Galactic along with plenty of others playing over the course of five days from Thurs 20 to Mon Mar 24.

But not everyone can make it all the way to Byron Bay for Easter, and for those folks there are plenty of sideshows for Bluesfest artists - regular Australian visitor Bluesman Keb Mo' comes to Adelaide on Wed 19 Mar at The Gov... Soul Sister Mavis Staples will appear at WOMADelaide from Mar 7-9... Canadian Singer/ Songwriter Ron Sexsmith has been happy to work in the background, but he'll be centre stage to present his songs of beauty at Fowler's Live on Tues 11 Mar.

Carl Cox is an honorary Aussie now with a house in Melbourne and more Australian shows than even he can remember, so it makes sense that he's playing the Big Day Out's Boiler Room again this year. But for those who can't wait until Fri 1Feb to see him, he's playing New Year's Eve at HQ - that's Mon 31 Dec.

But wait - believe it or not, Mr. Cox has some competition on the night and Puff would like to see a New Year's Eve Party fight to the death, but isn't sure who to back when he's up against and Latin Grooves' Fiesta at The Gov. Bringing Full band Hugo Salcedo & His TNT with Uruguayan singer Gonzalo Porta and plenty of Latin DJs it will be a carnival of reggaeton, Brazilian samba, bachata, cumbia, top 40 and more.

Matchbox Twenty have sold over a quarter of a million tickets to their Australian shows over the last 8 years, and you'd think that would be enough. But no, they want to keep racking up the numbers, so they'll be hitting our shores once again in the new year, bringing Thirsty Merc with them when they play at The Entertainment Centre on Sun 13 April.

Following successful sojourns East and West of the border on their national tour last month, Swayback return home to Adelaide briefly for a little rockin' Christmas cheer. Teaming up with those follically over-endowed folk, The Beards, the Swayers will make merry at, The Duke (who used to be The Duke Of York) this Fri 14 Dec.

So you though there was reason to be impressed with the first round of highlights from this year's WOMADelaide program, huh? Well you ain't seen nothing yet, because they'll be joined at this year's festival from Fri 7 - Sun 9 March by Beirut, The Beautiful Girls, Bob Evans, Clube do Balan¨o, David D'Or, Don McGlashan & the Seven Sisters, Farafina, Highway 31, Idan Raichel Project, The John Butler Trio, Joji Hirota Trio, Joseph Tawadros Trio, Kong Nay, Kora, Kutcha Edwards, Lowrider, Mamadou Diabate, Manjiri Kelkar, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Mavis Staples, Mista Savona, Mojo Webb, Nickodemus, Pwanga Womens Enterprise, Sarah Blasko, Soul Jazz Sound System, Susana Baca, Tenzin Choegyal and the Tashi Lhunpo Monks of Tibet, Tecoma, Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra, Victor Valdes and The Real Mexico Mariachi Band and Watussi.

The Pleasure Of Books are relative newcomers to the Adelaide live scene, but they're not shy about making new friends. The country-tinged group assure Puff that they're shows are "pretty wild," But you can judge for yourself on Thurs 13 Dec with Luke Ashby and The Damn Burdens.

It's a long way from the midday sun, but mad Englishman Joe Cocker will be headlining Barossa Under The Stars on Sat 2 Feb at the Barossa Arts & Convention Centre in Tanunda. The gravel-voiced former gas fitter's performance will mark ten years of the event in 2008.

When Puff wants to be wined and dined under the stars but can't make it all the way to the Barossa, Moonlight Cinema comes to the rescue. Playing a selection of new releases and classics (including a few music-related titles like 'La Vie En Rose', 'Across The Universe', 'Control' and 'The Blues Brothers') it's already opened on the green fields of Botanic Park and will run until Sun 17 Feb.

So you want tickets to the Big Day Out? Better book tickets to Perth or Auckland because with Adelaide's show sold out just like the rest of the country, and those two are the only ones with tickets left. Or you could get wise and enter dB's very own BDO Art competition and score yourself two of the most prized tickets in town. Details of how to enter are cunningly hidden elsewhere in this edition.

Daylight Underground have had a lot of fun since relocating to Melbourne earlier this year, but it's the time of year when everyone gets homesick for local pubs and Target air conditioning, so they're coming back for a series of shows in South Australia. They're booked until May back in Melbourne, so this could be the last time they're here for a while, and you can catch their live house, funky breaks and slamming dance floor set at Cafˇ Komodo or The Electric Light hotel on Fri 21, Rocket Bar on Sat 22 and Glenelg Beach hostel on Sun 23 Dec.
