Puff 'n Stuff

Ray Charles might have proved he was a musical genius when he came up with the idea of adding blues to country, but not even he thought of mixing it with punk. Thank the lord for Me First And The Gimme Gimmes then, because their latest album 'Love Their Country' does exactly that and if you want to hear what it sounds like live, saddle up and get yourself down to HQ on Tues 22 Jan 2008.

If you prefer your country like Puff's whiskey, straight up, perhaps you'd like to request the Beggars' new single Preacher I have Sinned from the Country Music Channel website. Shot at the Flinders University TV Studio, it uses background scenes from classic 1930s Western 'The Honour Of The Range' and is already getting notice in Europe.

In so many nights of performing (625 shows over 6 years, to be precise), The Cat Empire have never had to cancel a show. Until last Sunday that is, when a problem with Harry's throat forced them to pull out so that he didn't sustain permanent damage. All tickets purchased will be valid for the replacement show on January 12.

There are no such excuses for the Raggamuffin Festival, which has been cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. If you want to see UB40, The Wailers, Maxi Priest, Arrested Development and Katchafire, they will still be playing in all ticket-buying states.

The Checks long-awaited debut album is out, and 'Hunting Whales' might sound like something Ernest Hemingway would enjoy, but if a fiesta is more your style then get down to the launch on Fri Nov 2 at Jive. And if that's not enough, their sun also rises on Wed Nov 14 when they will be supporting Muse at the Entertainment Centre.

Disco Metal outfit Tony Font Show have been busy recording their latest EP "Selfish In Bed" in Byron Bay with the production talents of the best looking engineer in Australia, Paul Pilsneniks. They will be launching Selfish in Bed on Saturday the 17th of November at Jive with that most hirsute of bands, The Beards, and Sydney's Nobody Knew They Were Robots.

Ever wondered what a New Zealand synth-pop retro-futurist sounds like? So does Puff, and if you're sick of wondering then see Bachelorette as she launches her 'Isolation Loops' album on Friday November 2 at Urtext Studios, supported by Hit the Jackpot and Zeta League.

Laura recorded their first live album at the Hi-Fi Bar earlier this year and will be launching "(Re)Capitulate" at Enigma on Fri Nov 16...San Francisco psych-pop innovator Kelley Stoltz is returning to Australia next year and will play Fri Feb 8 at the Grace Emily Hotel... Melodic hardcore pioneers Lifetime tour Australia for the first time ever this December, bringing with special guests Miles Away with them

Puff can't think of many things that sound worse than doing a bellyflop in a pizza, but if that sounds like your thing or perhaps you'd just like to reminisce about the days when playing pass the parcel was about as much excitement as anyone could handle, Peter Combe will be playing the Gov on Sunday Nov 11.

Mystical prog noise fiends Bitches Of Zeus will flood Rundle St with noise when they play a reunion gig on Friday Nov 2 at the Exeter alongside fellow sonic experimenters Interzone Express and Mutual Loathing.

It's been a while since Puff has heard from Katalyst, but it turns out that he hasn't hibernating all winter but staying busy in the lab cooking up some beats. Not only will he have a new album out soon, he's bringing an extravaganza with all the album's guests to the Gov on Nov 22.

Perhaps he's heard about our huge urban bat population or maybe he just wants to avoid the city of churches, but whatever the reason, Adelaide will be missing out when Ozzy Osbourne visits all the usual East Coast stops next March.

After Sneaky Sounds System's last Adelaide show sold out so quickly, they've upgraded to a larger venue this time but in case you haven't heard enough good things about the last show, they're bringing a few friends along. Joining them at the Thebarton Theatre on Tues Oct 23 will be Swedish pop brat Robyn and locals Former Child Stars.

They're one of Australia's classic rock acts and he, well he comes from the land down under but on Fri Nov 9 at the Gov former Men at Work singer Colin Hay and The Black Sorrows will be teaming up for a very special double bill.

It's almost summer, so naturally The Beautiful Girls are letting their minds turn to touring once again and the sun-bleached balladeers will be passing through Adelaide on Sunday Dec 16 to play HQ.

Newtonheath are preparing for their debut album 'Come Together And Unite' launch on Sat 8 Dec at The Producer's Bar and already have reason to celebrate because a newly-signed distribution deal with Green Media means that the album will be available through all the major chains.

Puff always likes to see a local act do well, and melodic punk rockers Mere Theory certainly fall into that category. This Fri Nov 9 at Fowler's Live they kick off a national headlining tour in support of their debut album "Catalan Atlas," and if that's not enough they're also selling limited edition coloured vinyl copies of their single Gracefully.

Puff's been in a bit of a spin lately trying to figure out what to do with all the conflicting diary entries on Saturday Nov 10, but former Smog frontman Bill Callahan has kindly offered to move his show to the Sunday night to avoid any scheduling difficulties and all tickets are still valid. Thanks, Bill, you're a lifesaver.

While Puff's diary is out, it's also time to change the entry for Wed October 31, when The Indigo Girls bring their brooding folk rock to the Norwood Concert Hall instead of Thebarton Theatre.

Great Odin's Raven! Norse metal gods Amon Amarth will be bringing the thunder to Fowler's Live on Jan 4 2008 with support from Order Of The Buzzard and Victoria's Nothing.

They love themselves, they want you to love them and after a reunion performance at their ARIA Hall Of Fame induction last year the Divinyls are giving you every chance to do exactly that on their reunion tour. They'll be playing at Thebarton Theatre on December 20 with the church, and each ticket will include a copy of their first single back, Don't Wanna Do This.

"Welcome to Haterville, population YOU." That's the message from everybody's favourite hillbilly hip-hopper Kid Rock if you didn't support him after his latest album 'Rock n Roll Jesus' went to the #1 spot in the US. Don't worry Mr. Rock, Puff never doubted you.

Pogo sticks, basketballs, kangaroos - there are many things that are made for bouncing but Puff never thought the intangible human spirit was one of them. As it turns out, Puff was wrong and there'll be more Bouncing Souls than a hepped-up punk rocker knows what to do with at Fowler's Live on Mon Dec 3.

Locals Birth Glow sport a pretty impressive pedigree with members from Clue To Kalo, No Through Road and Sweet Raxx and their live shows have been wowing everyone in town. But not everyone can use Puff's magic teleporter to see every gig in town, so they have recorded their debut album, to let you can glory in their DIY tribal psychedelic rock in your own living room. Or, get the best of both worlds and see 'Ultimate Victory' launched on Friday November 16 at Rocket supported by Hit The Jackpot, Skeletons and Shame Spiral.

Keep your eyes peeled for a 1989 Toyota Hi-Ace Van QRN 479. No, it's not full of giveaways for a commercial rock station - it's Daddy Cool guitarist Ross Hannaford's vehicle that was recently stolen with all of his amplifiers, effects pedals and his main guitar in the back. All in all, it's pretty inconvenient seeing as he's scheduled to play at Adelaide International Guitar Festival in less than a month.

Sunday might be a day of rest for some, but if you'd prefer to rock out, Puff suggests you head along to the Crown and Anchor on Sunday Nov 4, where you'll find Rejusa, Squeaker, Finding Grace and The Irresponsibles combining for an all ages show. And at $6 entry that's only $1.50 a band, which Puff thinks is pretty darn good value.

What's that sound, I hear you asking? It's Puff cheering because after four years of lighting up laneways across the East Coast, St. Jerome's Laneway Festival will finally make its debut in Adelaide next year. It might not quite be a laneway, but Puff will definitely be at Fowler's Live on Sat 23 Feb when Feist, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!, Okkervil River, Gotye, Little Red, The Presets, The Panics, Bridezilla and The Holidays play.

Speaking of festivals, WOMADelaide have also made their first announcement of artist for next year's festival on March 7-9 at Botanic Park. Representing for the world of music and dance will be the very funky Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, barefoot diva Cesaria Evora, The Billy Cobham Septet, Taraf de Haidouks, Black Grace Dance Company, Dr. Natesan Ramani, indigenous all starsThe Black Arm Band, Taraf de Haidouks, The Terem Quartet, Titi Robin and memorable visual artists Compagnie Carabosse.

Puff always knew there was a reason South Australia was called the Festival State, and it seems like promoters are finally cottoning on. Joining the list of musical extravaganzas coming to Adelaide for the first time next year is Soundwave, which will bring The Offspring, Incubus, Coheed and Cambria. Social Distortion and Killswitch Engage to Adelaide on Sat 1 March with a venue tba.

No it's not the Estonian Liberation Front (they're perfectly happy with President Toomas Hendrik Iives, thankyou very much), E.L.F. is what Gerling's Darren Cross calls himself when he ditches his bandmates for a sampler and laptop to make indie dance music on his own. He'll be supporting The Dardanelles, purveyors of electronic shoegaze extraordinaire, at Jive on Sat Nov 3.

"If music be the food of love, play on" quoth the bard. But if you want music and food, Adelaide's first Vegan Festival has you sorted, with performances by a range of acts including Bird Lantern, Social Change and Modulus along with plenty of healthy food. It all goes down on November 4th at Glenelg Primary School.

They've been described as Japan's answer to Hedwig and The Angry Inch, and that alone is enough to make Puff stand up and take notice. Transgender lead singer/guitarist Chikako will be taking Japanese three-piece Ikochi through a range of styles from Japanese traditional to rockabilly on Fri November 9 at the new Edinburgh Castle Hotel and Sunday November 11 at The Electric Light Hotel

She might have left for Sydney 18 months ago, but Jay Jaxson hasn't stopped making music and will be returning to treat all her old friends to an array of unusual tunings and vocal acrobatics in support of the release of her new CD, "Midnight Garden" at the Grace Emily Hotel on Sun Nov 11.

Michigan metalheads The Black Dahlia Murder sure know how to make some noise but when they play at Fowler's Live on Wed 7 Nov, they'll have some pretty stiff competition from support Cephalic Carnage who have vowed that they will "raise both the expectations ad standards of extremity in heavy music."

Fifth birthday parties come in all shapes and sizes, but Puff thinks that Boomtown records has an unfair advantage when it comes to throwing a celebratory bash for themselves. Joining them for a rousing version of For He's A Jolly Good Fellow as they kick off the national Boomtown Showdown on Thurs 1 Nov are The Getaway Plan, In Fiction, The Amity Affliction and Elora Danan.
