Puff 'n Stuff

King Curly & The Doomsday Piano perform the Sunday Sessions at the Festival Centre on Sun 28 Oct from 3pm, and the show marks the end of King Curly's launch tour of the 'Doomsday Piano' album, with an all too rare final performance for his home crowd. This is original songs played by the musical dream team of KC, Elmo Reed, Zoe Hauptman and John Hibbard. As King Curly himself notes, he seems to operate from an alternative dimension that runs parallel to the one fed to us in the mass media. He is yet to chart anywhere. He hasn't been invited (or even nominated) to an awards night either - and no doubt he would do poorly if he ever competed on 'Australian Idol'. And yet King Curly finds an audience performing at our biggest music festivals and while touring nationally and overseas with the likes of Paul Kelly and The Cat Empire. Well, if it's good enough for them it's good enough for Puff.

Nightwish, the Finnish kings of Operatic Metal sure make a heck of a racket for a five piece, but that's okay because they're meant to. When world domination is your game you don't wanna let the side down with some wimpy substandard noise, oh no! Nightwish bring their grandeur and majesty (and probably shock 'n awe) and play HQ on Tues 29 Jan 2008.

Butterfingers hit the road on their 'Nothin' Much Happens' tour which sees them performing at Night Train on Sat 3 Nov with the most highly acclaimed Bluejuice... New Buffalo will be on tour with Missy Higgins and Tim Rogers and playing at the Ent Centre on Fri 7 Dec in an 'intimate mode', which means you better get your tickets pretty soon... My Chemical Romance play the Ent Centre on Mon 3 Dec - that much is true. Puff can now reveal that the support act for this gig, making it twice the fun - is the Getaway Plan... Another quick plug for Abby Dobson, whose splendid green shorts featured in the last edition of Puff N Stuff: Dobson performs her own show at The Gov on Thurs 18 Oct. Be there... The Klaxons, who proved remarkably difficult to pin down for an interview due to the inordinately complex and action packed touring schedule, land in Australia very soon for a full run of gigs. They'll be playing at HQ on Sun 21 Oct along with Damn Arms and some special guests... Ben Kweller hits the stage at Fowler's Live on Thurs 18 Oct, which is good news for fans of the soothsayer and gentle soul... the rather excellent Cat Empire combine with their touring companions Symbiosis for a rather special all ages show at Thebarton Theatre on Sun 28 Oct...

The rumours are true. The kids are taking over. So much energy was spent encouraging them to read so that they wouldn't end up haggard and hungover like other mortals, but then they realised that they knew more and they could play better guitar. Operator Please and Van She - both promising young bands who have released EPs to critical acclaim and built up solid fanbases not only around Australia but overseas - are now coming together on a vibrant double headlining tour that will show Australia just why they're the future at the Adelaide Uni Bar on 3 Nov. Opening the show is the achingly fresh Canberra outfit Soft Tigers, who consistently defy categorisation with so much energy they may soon not even be able to be called musicians!

Take one of rock's most charismatic frontmen, Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), add in three of modern rock's most iconic figures in guitarist Slash (Guns N' Roses), bassist Duff McKagan, drummer Matt Sorum (Guns N' Roses), and guitarist Dave Kushner (Wasted Youth, Electric Love Hogs) and you have Velvet Revolver: a band with enough talent, passion and genius fire-power to blow away all pretenders to the rock n' roll thrown. Having notched up three Grammy nominations and two #1 singles ('Slither' and 'Fall To Pieces') with debut album, 'Contraband', Velvet Revolver are returning to Australia this December, armed with a new album and an altogether more ambitious live show. Get on your head gear and prepare for one night of pure rock and F^$#&! roll at Thebby Theatre on Sun 9 Dec.

Summers a knockin' at the door and the icebergs they are a meltin'... That means it's time to announce our first instalment of international and local artists to join the annual Big Day Out travelling jamboree. Puff is honoured to be welcoming home two of the most dynamic and passionate acts that have ever performed on the Big Day Out. Of course we are talking about Rage Against The Machine (BDO 1996) and Bjork (BDO 1994). But don't think it's a two horse race, these shows are gearing up to be the most ambitious series of festivals in the event's 16 year history... you can also check out Grinspoon, Arcade Fire, Hilltop Hoods, Billy Bragg, Paul Kelly, LCD Soundsystem, Sarah Blasko, Faker, Midnight Juggernauts, Dizzee Rascal, Something With Numbers, Battles, Cut Off Your Hands on Fri 1 Feb at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Wooo hoooo!

Sydney purveyors of melancholic pop rock Faker are about to hit the road to celebrate the forthcoming release of their sophomore album 'Be The Twilight'. You can hear their brand new tunes and no doubt some golden oldies at Night Train on Sat 17 Nov alongside Melbourne's Childrens Collide and E.L.F otherwise known as the new solo laptronic indie dance band from Gerling's Darren Cross. Which should be a little rockin' and a boppin'.

Hard rock warriors Raven Black Night return to Enigma Bar Fri 2 Nov after a successful European tour in July that saw the band play HeadBangers open air Hard'N'Heavy summer nights and Hell's Pleasure festivals. Sleeping their way across a good portion of Central Europe, and dashing for trains in strange cities seems to have done them no harm whatsoever, and the band got great reviews which have lead to label interest. The boys are joined on the night by Synovee, Sydney band the Darker half and Vall Hull.

Mere Theory's album launch for 'Catalan Atlas' at Fowler's Live is an all ages show with very special guests No Through Road, The Open Season & Newtonheath. Tickets are $15, or $30 with a CD copy of 'Catalan Atlas'. The gig, for this is the important bit, is on Fri 9 Nov. Following that the boys will be hauling their new album and dusting off their chops for a full national tour. The new single Gracefully describes the life of a band on the road and is available as a hand-numbered coloured vinyl single. And that's pretty special right there!

Having recently won the Triple J unearthed contest local lads New Season Black will be in the winner's circle at the Taste Of Chaos, playing with and alongside international acts such as The Used, Rise Against, Drop Dead, Gorgeous, The Bled, and Gallows. Since winning this prize, NSB have been played on Triple J numerous times, and were ranked a fairly lowly #744 on the unearthed charts. Well, now they've shot into the top 20 less than one week after winning, and they're pretty chuffed about that. Incidentally, New Season Black have just finished recording their upcoming EP which is due for release towards the end of the year - the recording was done at Adelaide's Soundhouse studios and produced/mixed by both Anthony and Anj. The songs have been sent to US to be mastered by engineer Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound Studios NYC. Sweet.

The gentle folk tinges of Ned Collette's previous album 'Jokes & Trials' are still evident on his just released his new album 'Future Suture', but it sees him broadening out his sound pallet and vision, with elaborate arrangements which have him striding in to another green world of sound. Collette plays a solo show at the Jade Monkey on Sat 3 Nov to launch the album properly, and he'll be joined by ex-Adelaideans Brer Mouse for a very rare performance from them. Ned will also be back in December with his 3 piece band to perform 'Future Suture' in its fully arranged glory.

If you're up for a crazy, zany, wacky, mad cat, last minute kind of night, go to the Exeter Hotel on Fri 19 Oct to witness three off-the-wall, kooky bands, being Patriarchal Death Machine, Space Bong and Thunderclaw. Please however do wear earplugs! Apparently, this has been a public service announcement.

Sydney-based troubadour Dave Calandra has been moving around this wide brown land performing at many festivals and events in support of his debut album 'Alchemy', and getting the word out. It may well be that Calandra indeed utilised the words "wide brown land" in a song, that would be a sweet coup indeed. The success of Dave's last sojourn to Adelaide has prompted a return visit this month, playing two very intimate shows at The Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sat 27 and Sun 28 Oct. This time around, Dave will be teaming up with very special guests The Yearlings for an un-missable evening of alt-country and urban folk, so he's pretty much got the bases covered right there.

The New Electric return to Adelaide for more fun times. The ex-Pornlanders' last showing here was in early August for the launch of their debut EP. And what a party! The Producers was packed to the brim to witness why this band has been touted as one of this country's most exciting live acts. Catch them this Fri 19 Oct at the Rhino Room with The Paul Vallens Combo and the infamous DJ Gavin Scotton (UK). Get there early because numbers are limited and it's set to be a big one.

Soursob Bob recorded a live album in May of this year at a really fun gig at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in front of a capacity crowd - never mind the fact that he's chosen to call it 'Live At The Wheatty', anyone who was there is likely to remember the occasion. It's more important that people who weren't there understand what they're missing, for Bob is a songwriter and lyricist of rare grit and talent. But if you think that's special, factor in that he's also spent the last year and a half recording a full new studio album, 'Someplace Good Already', which features lots of different styles and lots of different instruments. Guest musicians including Mal Webb from Victoria (trumpet and trombone), and both CDs will be available to buy at his launch gigs. They are both at the Wheaty (where else?) on Sat 20 (with The Beards) and Sun 21 Oct (4pm with the Fiddle Chicks).

Adelaide metallers Skintilla are currently receiving airplay on American Internet Radio Station 'I Like 2 Rock', being featured on the 'Into The Pit' metal show and last week were on the station's Talent Showcase band of the week. It's all good. Catch Skintilla live on Sat 27 Oct at the Magill Club Uren St Magill where they play a licensed all ages show with Taunt, Octanic, The Ascension Process and Ridiculed Belief. Doors open 7pm.

"They're the most talked about and anticipated band of 2007, the band is Dangerous! And the name is burning on the tip of every wagging & salivating tongue on the Australian music scene for a reason. It was formed by key members of ex Adelaide touring act - Wendy Icon in August 2007." Er, no, not really. But if Puff feels that familiar wagging and salivating action coming on, it'll be off to the Fridge to check out the munchie action, actually. But thanks for caring. Anyway, Dangerous! will be appearing for the first time with platinum selling 80's legends LA Guns at Night Train on Sat 27 Oct.

Damien Leith's album 'Where We Land' debuted at #1 and has now been certified platinum, making it the second consecutive #1 album for Damien. It's certainly got him the attention, Leith has had to extend his current Australian tour, and now includes dates in SA and WA. He'll perform at Her Majesty's on Thurs 22 Nov. Hey Damien, do you feel superstitious? Did you know that date commemorates JFK day? You might wanna google it.

Ha! What most excellent and righteous news, dude... For many years, AC/DC fans going to ACDC.com have been disappointed (or maybe not) to discover that their favourite band's domain name is occupied by a bi-sexual pornographic site! AC/DC now have the site back. Which is to say if the rumours were true it might be synchronous advertising... in the event the band has released a statement which coincides with the release of their forthcoming double live DVD 'Plug Me In' on Sat 20 Oct, which says in part "If you stopped by ACDC.com over the years, you were likely to be surprised by what greeted you (perhaps pleasantly so for the more randy of you). No longer. ACDC.com is now serving its proper master and we assure you that the dirty deeds being done dirt cheap will now be of an entirely different variety. So feel free to visit us from work, school or, for long-time visitors to the site, from the usual privacy of your basement." With knobs on!

That's it, now
