Massive congratulations to former Adelaide guy and former member of the band Krystapinch Steph Laschuk, who hooked the 2007 Vogel Award for Literature for his as yet unpublished book in homage to Magda Szubanski.
artEast 2007 is described as "A visual and performing art feast", which seems to tick all the right boxes, being arty, and enticing, and a feast, even though it's not THE Feast Festival, which runs just a little later. In any event, artEast 2007 is to be held in the East End of the city, with a focus on Rundle Street, from Fri 5 Oct to Fri 2 Nov, and promises to host a vibrant collection of original artworks by dynamic emerging South Australian artists, which sounds a bit like SALA Festival, except, of course, it isn't. Included, for example, are paintings by Ricky-Jai Revilla, including this one, Orianthi.
The Friends of Prospect Library have something of a mission, as you might guess, given their name. As part of their activities, and in the Gallery room. They're having a film evening, screening the BBC TV thriller written by Alan Bennett from an actual incident in the life of Australian actress Coral Browne, 'An Englishman Abroad'. This Cold War spy drama will screen on Fri 21 Sept.
Coming up at the Cinematic Cabaret Club in Richmond will be an October screening of Werner Harzog's 'My Best Fiend' and they'll follow that up in November with 'The Triplets Of Belleville'. Stay tuned for more info...
The 'LifeWorkArt' Exhibition opens on Fri 5 Oct and is the collaboration of 20 Australian artists who proclaim their deep concern about the Federal Government's workplace relations laws. To put a voice to their concern, as it were, they've decided upon a joint exhibition in this electoral season - 'LifeWorkArt', they say, seeks to promote discussion of work and workplace rights in contemporary Australia; and includes work by such artists as Greg Johns, David Archer, Anne Newmarch, David Blaiklock, Andy Petrusevics, Grant Hobson (Melbourne), and Whyalla artist Karl James. The exhibition can be found at Cafˇ Saso, in Light Square.
As part of the upcoming OzAsaia Festival at the Festival Centre, there's to be a big ideas seminar, and it features your chance to hear former Prime Minister Bob Hawke give air to his ideas and his concerns on Australia's engagement with the rest of Asia. The seminar will open the OzAsia Festival... named the 'Big Ideas' Symposium, it all kicks off on Sat 22 Sept from 10.15am.
It seems official, but then again... Natalie Koutsamanis was named the new PR coordinator at State Theatre Co last week, but then almost immediately the press release was withdrawn, to be followed by... deafening silence. Koutsamanis may have got the job following the departure of Anna Day, and she certainly seems to be filling the role.
'How To Eat Ice Cream' really caught the collective imagination, being Claire Richards ode to the sticky pastime, and it shows from Thurs 20 Sept at the Urban Cow Gallery in Frome Street, city. The exhibition is one of new illustrations by Claire Richards introducing a cast of little people and their pets. Neat, and sticky business.
Travels Through Topical Landscapes' seems an apt title for videos by Cole Larsen and paintings by Robert Habel, now on display at the Flinders University City Gallery, State Library of South Australia, North Terrace. These are recent collaborative works by Cole Larsen and Robert Habel from residencies in Tasmania and Singapore and from travels in South Australia and the Kimberley Ranges. The image is Robert Habel's Painting At The Lochiel Salt Plains 2006.
