Something For Kate

Something For Kate is no doubt a household name throughout Australia and, with a musical career spanning over ten years, 'The Murmur Years' has been released in order to pay homage to their musical achievements. With a national tour kicking off in September, I spoke with drummer Clint Hyndman regarding where the band has come from, and where he sees the group heading in the near future.

"We're super excited about this tour. It's been a while since we've been out on the road and we're really looking forward to it. We'll probably be playing a lot of the tracks from 'The Murmur Years'. It'll be a bit of a nostalgic trip playing some of the older songs."

'The Murmur Years', a compilation of the bands 10-year partnership with record label Murmur, has recently hit shelves and Hyndman explains what it was like to pick the tracks that featured on this album. "It was definitely nostalgic because you look through it and you listen to it, and I hadn't heard any of them in so long. It was kind of weird to basically look at your life over the past twelve years. Even looking at some of your videos, it's like your life documented, you can't help but feel nostalgic. We basically sat around and said 'Submit your top twenty tracks for this record' and we all agreed on probably ten or fifteen each that we all thought had to be on there. Then we compromised the rest of them between each of us. Some songs like Back To You, Pinstripe and Down The Garden Path are staples that had to be on there and aren't really singles. You know, that's what we wanted 'The Murmur Years' to be, not just a group of singles. We wanted it to be album tracks and just hidden gems that a lot of people might not have had the opportunity to hear."

And will Something For Kate be going strong for years to come? "Yeah I think so, I think that's why we titled it 'The Murmur Years' because we didn't want to write 'Best Of'. It's just a document of a period of ten years when we were on a label called Murmur that doesn't exist now; it's more to document that. But yeah we hope that there will be many more years of Something For Kate to come anyway... The only new material at this stage is The Futurist which we put on 'The Murmur Years'. We haven't really gotten together to write at the moment, but we're all really close friends and we hang out a lot so I think it's just a matter of having six to eight months off from it for a while and letting Paul do his solo thing. I think people also need a little bit of a break from Something For Kate for a while and then when we come back it'll be fresh and exciting again. But yeah I can't wait to do the next Something For Kate record, for sure."

Hyndman goes on to explain why he thinks the band has lasted for so long, and describes his favourite memories throughout his Something For Kate career. "I think we're a really tight unit and really good friends outside of this so that's a major part of it. You've got to be able to communicate with each other and know each other's boundaries and I think that's what we really know. We know when to push someone and when to ease off; it's just knowing each other inside out and we just really enjoy it at the end of the day... Playing Big Day Out tours has been a highlight, and something that I went to as a kid so it's always great to do that. Playing with David Bowie was amazing. Travelling through Europe was great fun also. There are countless memories, but I suppose it's more of the fact that we've lasted for twelve years which is just amazing. I think bands can struggle to keep it together and I think it's amazing that we've kept it together for that long and are still feeling strong about looking onwards and upwards at another record."
