Pathogen

Now in its third year, and moving from its original home of The Bridgeway Hotel to Fowler's Live, annual all-ages metal event Against The Grain (aka 'The Great Adelaide Trendkill') will soon be returning with another colossal line-up: one that, this time around, will comprise equal numbers of local and interstate bands. One of those interstate bands will be Perth's Pathogen, who'll already be familiar to many here from numerous previous visits they've made - two of the most notable ones in which they supported Children Of Bodom and The Black Dahlia Murder respectively.

"Jason from Truth Corroded asked us to play this year," Pathogen guitarist Glenn Dyson explains when I ask how his group managed to get on the bill for this year's show. "He sent us an email, made us an offer, and we just went, 'Sounds good, let's do it!' I've known him for at least a couple of years now; we brought Truth Corroded over to Perth for a few shows, and we've stayed at his place when we've played shows in Adelaide. We always seem to get a good reception in Adelaide; we've sold quite a few CDs and T-shirts there, which is always a good sign! I remember our shows with Children Of Bodom and The Black Dahlia Murder going down particularly well."

Pathogen's appearance with The Black Dahlia Murder was the last time they were over here, and Dyson informs me there's been a small lineup change since then. "We've got a new drummer," he tells me. "His name's Scott Farrell, and he actually used to live in Mount Gambier. He moved to Perth about nine months ago; he works in a drum shop here. He volunteered his services when the guy we had on before him was leaving, so we just told him to come and have a jam with us, and we'd see how it went. His predecessor had only been with us for a few months, and had to leave because of university commitments; I don't think he quite realised what he was undertaking when he joined the band!"

Getting back to Against The Grain, Dyson is looking forward to playing at it. "It'll be an all-day thing," he says, "with fourteen bands in all. It'll start around lunchtime and have bands from all over the country coming to play; the lineup looks great, that's for sure. From what I've heard about it, it's one of those things that just gets bigger and bigger each year. Obviously it's successful, and the more successful things like that get, the bigger you can make them. I hope it continues that way because we'd love to come back and play it again in years to come, that's for sure!"
