Job For A Cowboy

When I mention the name Job For A Cowboy, I am not actually negotiating the latest Billy Crystal 'City Slickers' movie, or a John Wayne classic film. In fact, I am not referring to any aspect of the whole western shootout movie culture at all. What I am actually referring to is Arizona's newest death metal sensations who have taken the world by storm in a very short amount of time.

"It has been a little hard, all the attention. In the music business, things move really quickly, it's kind of weird because a lot of things go over your head. I can see why some people may lose track of what they are doing, and get too wrapped up in it. Luckily for us we find it easy to roll with it and just go with the flow. It was hard to adjust to, because we can never make plans at home anymore with touring, and it gets difficult, but we love this, it's better than anything. It does get scary though, like we have grown in popularity really quickly, I mean the faster you go up the faster you can come down. So we have just been really focusing on building a solid career for the band so we can do this for a long time yet," guitarist Bobby Thompson illustrates just minutes before jumping on stage.

After releasing an EP entitled 'Doom' and posting a few of the tracks on their MySpace, the five-piece built a very large fan base extremely quickly. This of course caught the attention of the highly regarded Metal Blade Records, home to some of the most infamous metal bands in the world such as As I Lay Dying and The Black Dahlia Murder. The boys were also soon playing shows and touring, and somehow during all of this they found the time to settle down and write their debut album 'Genesis'.

"The CD is actually a concept album; it revolves around this theme that there are a lot of Christian leaders who are concerned about new technologies which are becoming available. And this album focuses on a certain piece of technology, which is a biochip. It's basically a chip that is the size of a grain of rice; it's implanted into a human's skin and stores medical information and personal information like social security numbers and stuff like that. It can also be used as a form of currency, so if you walk into a store you are scanned and the chip is read, then you can just walk out with what you need so you don't have to line up or pay. Anyways, the album looks at the fact that this chip is like a mark of the beast and is just another step towards fulfilling the prophecy of the end of the world. At the start of the record, the first track is about the birth of the Anti-Christ then it finishes with the end of the world. Jonny [Davy, vocalist] could explain it better but that's basically it."

Being of such a young age (most of the band are barely twenty), Job For A Cowboy have already accomplished more than what most bands could even dream of achieving. Thanks to (some extent) the current MySpace revolution, which has redefined the publicity of music and forms of communication, it's a wonder how the boys cope with such a massive amount of attention.

"It is really intimidating to be so young and touring with bands that have been doing it for over ten years. I mean the other day we played the Sounds Of The Underground in Kentucky, and Bohemoth played before us which totally blew our minds because they are one of our favourite bands."

The Arizona locals are soon to embark on their maiden journey to Australia, and even though the thought of this may seem a little daunting, the excitement about this upcoming tour can practically be smelt in the air. "We are really excited for the tour. We don't have many expectations because we really don't know what to expect. But we get a lot of messages telling us we should come to Australia, so people do want us there. I mean we never thought we would be able to get over there so soon, but our people wanted us to go over as soon as we could so hopefully it all goes well."
