Puff'n'Stuff

With the mittens and fluffy socks well packed away, Puff is looking forward to the prospect of summer - and, really, it's not that too far away! With a whole bunch of tours recently being announced, it's well and truly rolling into the summer season.

And here's a tour that falls right into that category. Yes, those crazy kids and their crazy capers, Architecture In Helsinki, have announced a headline spree across Australia just in time for the start of summer. Riding high on the release of their album 'Places Like This', they'll be at the Gov on Thurs 29 November where we're guessing the beer garden will be packed and the amber fluid will be drank aplenty. Roll on the warm weather, Puff says. Here's one for the fans... Zappa Plays Zappa, the concert experience that brings the music of the late Frank Zappa to the stage, under the direction of Dweezil Zappa, will visit Australia this summer for the first time. Joining the tour is guitar legend Steve Vai and vocalist Ray White, as well as Dweezil on lead guitar. Put this date in your diary - Sun 2 Dec at Thebarton Theatre. Or rather this - Thurs 6 Sept, 'cos that's when tickets go on sale.

In more tour news, the man otherwise known as JT, Justin Timberlake, is heading to Adelaide for the first time, accompanied by an 11-piece band and a crack team of dancers. Apparently he'll perform in the round, creating a 360 degree multimedia viewing experience for all you fans out there. He's at the Entertainment Centre Sat 3 November.

Get your drinking caps ready as three of Australia's most notorious party bands join together for one hell of a tour! 'Drunk and Disorderly' will travel the country over the next two months, boasting a truly forceful line-up with The Amity Affliction, Deez Nuts and The Daylight Curse. This all ages show hits our town 4 Oct October at The Underground.

Byron Bay's masters of metalcore Parkway Drive will be at The Gov on Thurs 18 Oct to promote the release of their new album 'Horizons' which hits store 6 Oct. They'll be bringing special guests The Warriors (USA), Her Nightmare and No Apologies along for the ride, and Puff has heard on the grapevine that it's selling out extremely fast, so if you're a fan you better hop to it!

Look out. That big bellied opera singer who has taken the world by storm, otherwise known as Paul Potts of 'Britain's Got Talent' fame, is heading to Australia. It's a while away yet folks - Wed 16 April next year to be exact, at the Adelaide Festival Theatre - but in Puff's opinion you might want to get your hands on some tickets soon, as everyone appears to be getting caught up in this fairytale story.

Labelled everything from post trip hop to alternative roots music, Tecoma fuses more than just musical genres - the young and the young at heart supposedly flock to her shows. Celebrating the new album 'Home Brew' in stores this month, Amira Pyliotis, the musician behind the name, will be bringing her distinct modern cabaret voice to the Grace Emily on Thurs 13 Sept and will be joined on stage by Ben Wheeler as well as Lucas Taranto (the bass player from Gotye).

These guys have a crazy live show but now Puff thinks they've just gone plain crazy... When a record 7 shows were sold out at Sydney's Metro Theatre in September 1996, a benchmark was set that has never been challenged. Enter The Cat Empire, who in October this year will attempt to set a new record with 8 shows over 7 days. The event will see hundreds of fans fly in from other states and will be supported by The Bamboos and a troupe of other performers, so Puff suggests you hop onto Webjet quick smart. Or you can wait until they come to Adelaide on Sun 28 Oct at Thebarton Theatre, all in the ode to celebrating their new album 'So Many Nights' out later this month.

After four months of epic touring across the parched outer-reaches of WA and the NT, Perth GypRock band, Double Entendre are bringing their 'singin', pickin', screamin' and skankin' to our fair state for the first time. Check 'em out on Wed 19 Sept at the Promethean, Fri 21 at Fad Bar and Sat 22 at the Folk Club of SA.

After a few years of short tours and one off festival appearances, those lads we all know and love, Regurgitator, are getting psyched for an Australian tour. Quan, Ben, Pete, and latest permanent addition Seja Vogel (from Sekiden) on keyboard duty packed their bags and jetted off to Brazil to record their sixth album (doesn't that make you feel old?) 'Love and Paranoia', and they'll be at the Night Train on Sat 13 October.

Esteemed musical performer, composer and songwriter Barb Jungr is making her way to Oz. Barb is one of Europe's finest voices, best known as a famous interpreter of works by artists such as Bob Dylan and songs sung by Elvis Presley. You can catch her on Sat 15 Sept at The Space within the Adelaide Festival Centre.

Before slipping off overseas to release their first single in Europe, pop trio Sneaky Sound System have managed to squeeze in an Australian concert tour, aptly named '2007: A Spaced Out Odyssey'. With catchy as hell songs UFO, Pictures and I Love It (darn, don't get Puff started), they'll be bringing their live show to Thebarton Theatre on Fri 16 November.

The Destroy All Lines camp sure is busy, bringing Adelaide some amazing bands over the next few months. Hailing from Toronto Canada is Boys Night Out. They have shared the stage with the likes of My Chemical Romance, Saves The Day and even earned a stint on the US Warped tour. Adelaide, make them feel welcome, they play Fowler's Live 25 for the first time ever in Aus!

A tour that Puff thinks a lot of people have been itching for... With their debut album marking them out as a band on a mission, Young & Restless are set to press ignition and burn across the nation on their album launch tour next month. On stage, fronted by Karina Utomo who effortlessly and unintentionally smashes every stereotype you may still be unconsciously clinging on to, Young & Restless play with an intensity that needs to be experienced. You can do just that at Enigma Bar on Fri 15 Oct with Fire Santa Rosa Fire! and Skeletons. And, if you're quick, you can also see them Sat 8 Sept with Midnight Juggernauts and Damn Arms at The Gov.

After the success of last year's Australian tour, The Black Dahlia Murder return to Oz to cut your faces off and rip out your hearts in support of their third blackened opus of thrashing melodic death metal, 'Nocturnal'. Riding along with them for the show is Cephalic Carnage, hailing from Denver, Colorado, who are apparently prepared to 'smash us across the forehead with a fully loaded club of metal diversity'. Sounds all a bit too gory for Puff's cowardly heart, but if you're up for it they'll be at Fowler's Live on Wed 7 November.

New Jersey punk rockers Lifetime tour Australia for the first time ever this December, catch 'em 4 Dec at Fowlers Live. Joining them on their maiden voyage will be west coast hardcore punk outfit Miles Away... GGGGGGGRRRRRR It's Napalm Death. Catch the Birmingham metal act tonight 5 Sept at Fowler's Live along side Blood Duster & Captain Cleanoff... Don't forget, 1990s play Fowler's Live on Thurs 27 September with Dardanelles and Fire Santa Rosa Fire!... With Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth completely sold out, new shows announced, and tickets selling fast everywhere else, Puff suggests you hop to it if you wanna catch the Klaxons while they're in town (Sun 21 Oct at HQ)... Melbourne rock lads 67 Special are launching their brand new spankin album 'The Devil May Care' on 15 Sept at Jive... While we are on the subject of rockin Melbourne bands Kisschasy play our fine city 7 Sept at HQ launching 'Hymns For The Non Believer' with British India and local boys In Fiction... And Cog are coming to town. Cog are coming to town! Did you hear me? They play HQ launching their new single 'What If' on 11 Nov with Brisbane outfit Dead Letter Circus.

If you've got Funeral For A Friend tickets or plan on going along to the show, you'll need to know this - the venue has been changed from HQ to Fowler's Live. Same day (Thurs 13 Sept), same time, same West End Music Festival, just different place, and your tickets will be valid at the new venue.

In February this year Snow Patrol were THE hottest ticket in town, riding high on the success of their hit single Chasing Cars (you know, that song, which also coincided with an awfully teary moment on one of Puff's favourite TV shows). This month sees the band perform to their biggest Australian crowds in arena stages across the nation - and Puff recently had word that the Adelaide show (Wed 12 Sept) is very nearly, almost, and probably by the time this goes to print, sold out. If you missed out, never fear, as just for dB readers we have a special online competition with five double passes to the show up for grabs. Check out www.dbmagazine.com.au

In a contemporary tribute to the art of silent film accompaniment, the Media Resource Centre (MRC) presents Silent reMasters. Applications are now open for composers, musicians, DJs and sound artists to re-score one of three famous silent films: Fritz Lang's 'Dr Mabuse, Part 1', Buster Keaton's 'The General' and Tod Browning's sinister film 'The Unknown' starring Lon Chaney. Participants will be provided with a $1,000 production budget and mentor support to assist in the creation of their score. The films will be screening with their new score at the Mercury Cinema from 6-13 Dec 2007, with participants performing live in front of the Mercury screen.

Twelve25 Youth Enterprise Centre is Salisbury's hottest new live music venue and will be bursting at the seams with young talent and enthusiasm on Sat 22 Sept. This drug and alcohol free event known as Ascension 07 will provide local emerging bands with the opportunity to showcase their skills. Step up to the stage Ward 17, Cure Kid, C.R.A.F.T., MC Dime, McGowan Street Murder and Quest!

An update on proceedings of the National Campus Band Competition, indie pop rockers Room One and screamo kids Against The Overdose were the lucky two finalists of the Adelaide Uni heats. Flinders University will be hosting the State Final on Fri 14 Sept.

Adelaide's original outsiders Society Of Beggars are banding with some like-minded folk in September to bring some rock and roll fury to the masses. Jumping easily from fast energetic riffage to moody beatlesque rock, the SOB's are hitting venues hard in September. First up is the Rhino Room on 7 Sept with Blackbirds, and then across town at the Holdfast Hotel on the 21st with Audiopilot.

Ricochet Pete are launching their first EP 'sugar coated' on Fri 14 Sept at the Jade Monkey and to go with theme, there will be stacks of free lollies at the gig for everyone. Puff's in! Joining in the frivolity will be Jump! Your Revolutionary and Twentythree nineteen.

Angelik, Blow Up Betty and Miss Golly Gosh have a gig at the Crown & Anchor Hotel on Sat 15 Sept, and it's Angelik's last gig for a while so they're inviting everyone to get down there and get messy with them!

Still on local news, Adelaide band Grźbenstyle, self-proclaimed "Monsters of Funk-Rock", will be holding their demo launch at Rhino Room on Fri 21 Sept.

Head over to †rtext Studios (Level 2/14 Grenfell Street) on the 22nd of September for 'She Said What', a day-long event for and by female artists, musicians, performers and zinesters. The day kicks off at 12pm with stalls, art and performance, then from 8.30pm, catch local and interstate acts Sianna Lee (Love Outside Andromeda, Melb), Assassination Collective (Melb), Spider Vomit (Melb), Miss Golly Gosh and Dimension Flux plus DJ Red Evan and DJ Pash This!

Electronic-indie-popartist Zeal is brandishing a guitar hero controller and unveiling his new live trio to launch his dŽbut EP 'This Is How I Hear Your Voice', along with Leighstardust and Jello Sheriff. For a night of eclectic and inventive pop, get to the Fad Bar on Sat 8 Sept.

And for a hit of Melbourne mixed in with some local, check out this show... Labelled as 'the most abrasive live band in Melbourne', Violent Disorder will be making their debut trek to Adelaide this month. Witness them redefine intensity when they take the stage at the Lizard Lounge on Fri 14 Sept with fellow Melbournians 5 Star Prison Cell as well as local lads Universum and The Ascension Process.

Get out on the weekend of Sept 13 - 16 (actually there's a bit of week mixed in there, but it is near the end) for the inaugural West End Music Festival. The full program is on www.myspace.com/westendmusicfestival2007.
