Puff'n'Stuff

Self styled as Tasmania's favorite bass+drum 2-piece act, The Muddy Turds, who are sometimes known as the Muddy Turfs, are on the road throughout June and July, an odyssey which sees them whoopin' it up at The Southwark on Fri 6 July, with support from the newly reconstituted Fiendish Cavendish and Peterhead. Fiendish Cavendish, it must be noted, were raised in conversation just last week when Puff was imbibing fair quantities of Guinness with a friend orr two, so there must have been something magical in the bottle or the [pint] glass. Good to see them back!

In some other news of a vaguely 'Goodness me, didn't see that coming" variety is the missive which stated that the wait is finally over for all those Go-Betweens fans, new and old, since their new album 'Write Your Adventures Down' is in stores now. Yes, it definitely said the Go Betweens... but it's a quaint mis-step in the timelines of pop music, for the album in question is the tribute album being helmed by former Custard guy Dave McCormack. He tells all in an interview elsewhere in this particular magazine.

Based in Melbourne, the rather hot Five Star Prison Cell are off on a national tour in support of the release of their second album 'Slave's Of Virgo'â The Sequels To The Aftermath tour (dunno what that means, either) will show case songs from the new album as well as from their debut album 'The Complete First Season'. It's to be hoped that the band's use of grammar, and apostrophes in particular, is not some kind of creeping disease which will infest their songs, or indeed, their lyrics. The result would be some kind of horrendous stutter. Catch them at the 'Against The Grain Festival', (with Double Dragon + more) on Sat 15 Sept.

It's been a few years since they were last in Adelaide, which is why the La Bomba crew are so durned excited about the imminent arrival of the Latin show band - all fourteen of them - Furia, who are on the bill an scheduled to appear at The Gov on Sat 30 June.

Oh dear, me people have been waiting for absolute years to see this gig and many thought they'd never get the chance - given the, erm, friction in the band. Talking about Black Sabbath and their later Dio incarnation of course, with the elfin-like Ronnie James Dio screaming at the moon. The problem is, of course, that so many people thought they'd not get another chance that they've gone ahead and sold it out. Completely. All done, all finished. Kaput! If you left it too long to book your tickets for the show at the Thebby Theatre on Sun 5 August you are, as the uncouth like to say, SOL.

One man musical onslaught - in a restrained and very earthy and respectful kind of way, Nathan Kaye, who hails from the sunny climes of Byron Bay on Australia's East Coast, is likely to get a rude and wintry shock on his current tour when he hauls ass into Adelaide. No doubt he'll have packed a warm jacket - which he'll need, but be aware this guy will be toting a bit of luggage since he plays guitar, didgeridoo, slide didge, human beat-box, and he sings! See Nathan Kaye bring his 'Music For the People & Our Planet' tour to Jive on Fri 6 July.

They make a bit of a song and dance about it, which just goes to show how very pleased are Victorian band Austin Floyd to be bringing their country rock show back to their spiritual home in Adelaide at The Wheatsheaf Hotel. It's been a while so the lads assure punters they've got a few new songs to try out, and they're also packing the suitcase of surprises - their fellow Victorian brethren Clinkerfield will join them on the roadtrip. The gig is on Fri 29 June.

Clearly, it's the season for charity concerts and good spirited public works, so everyone give themselves a hearty pat on the back... Jimmy & The Mirrors join forces with City Riots & Antony Of The Future for a very special gig at Jive on Sat 14 July. 'Kids And Trees' is the name of the concert and the three bands are raising funds going to conservation work in Kenya and community care in South Africa.

Leaping back into the ring with a combined weight of something greater than the average Glenelg tram is 'Krankfest 2 - Winter Session', with an all-star lineup which hits the canvas at HQ on Fri 6 July. Look at this: the bands playing on the night are Black Knight, Raw Ether, Granny Flat, Swayback and Tracer to headline. Due to overwhelming demand 'Krankfest 2' is a fully Licensed ALL AGES show!! You'd better bring ID if you wanna drink.

Sun 1 July was going to be a night to remember at the Adelaide UniBar, but unfortunately Franky Lee has been forced to cancel the tour. No word is yet through as to why, but apparently a rescheduled date is a possibility.

Amazingly, Puff was the worthy recipient of no less than six emails on a Friday afternoon suggesting that local hard edge/straightcore rock band Mere Theory had signed on the dotted line for the release of their album 'Catalan Atlas', produced by super-producer Richard Stoltz. Mere Theory are now proudly at home as members of the Boomtown Records family.

Coming up in August, which really isn't that far away... Melbourne's 4th annual hardcore festival, 'Sike Your Mind' is coming of age and taking to the streets to become Australia's first touring hardcore fest. Carpathian and Miles Away join new blood Abandon All Hope along with local legends and the possibility of Her Nightmare, 50 Lions and Down To Nothing (US) are on a selection of dates, and the Melbourne weekend farewells 2 bands with their final shows. Coming up at Fowler's Live on Fri 24 Aug.

City Riots have been asked to support a band from Chicago called The Academy Is on a national tour, which will see ythm in Adelaide at the Gov on Sat 4 Aug. Also playing; The Cobra Starship... it's been somewhat over a year but Hekyl is finally launching its debut EP 'Stochastic Ruminations Of The Babirusa' on Sat 30 June at the Crown and Anchor. Hekyl will be joined by Adelaide's masters of funky rock and rocking funk, Tony Font Show. It's free, and doors open at 9.00pm... that weirdy wigged out dude Prince (you remember, he was huge in the 1980s) has signed to Columbia Records and is due to release his new album 'Planet Earth'. The album is instores on Sat 14 July... congratulations to The Fiddle Chicks who were recently awarded 'Most Outstanding Act', and 'Best CDRrelease For 2006/7' at the recent SA Folk Awards. Not only that, but Emma Luker won 'Most Outstanding Instrumentalist' for the second year running. Their new CD 'Out The Window, Over The Gate' is to be launched in style with a 'CD Launch Tour of Adelaide', starting on Sun 8 July at The Wheatsheaf Hotel, with The John Baker Duo (4pm). Then they team up with The Yearlings on Sat 21 July at The Folk Centre (8pm), and finally at the Singing Gallery on Sat 4 Aug with Soursob Bob!... Melbourne's 5 piece electrorganic super pop band Glovebox will be returning to Adelaide for one show only, and that show is at The Wheatsheaf Hotel on Sat 7 July, with local Adelaide band Salty. Glovebox look happy to be returning, don't they?

This year the 'Make Poverty History' concert organisers, Reach and the Oaktree Foundation, join forces again to take the movement to another level. From 1 July 2007 for one week, 500 of Australia's most dynamic young people, who have been especially selected and trained, will travel on the 'Make Poverty History' Roadtrip. Buses will depart from Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and the ACT, with most Road Trips heading to Sydney. The Adelaide Roadtrip Kicks off with a Concert at the Adelaide Showgrounds on Mon 2 July, and featuring Lowrider, Dukes & TV Rock, Guy Sebastian, and Bliss n Eso. Gates open at 6.00pm.

More news as it comes to the fevered brow... Jac Dalton, Southpoor & The Rustlers -play a 'country cavern rock'event at The Cavern in the city on Sun 1 July, with the event kicking off from 4pm... after a sellout launch for their stunning new album 'The Good China' in hometown Melbourne last weekend, Australian indie guitar blokes the Icecream Hands head interstate. Hey, they're touring to all parts of the country, but the important news is they're on their way to Adelaide on what seems an all too infrequent occasion. They'll be launching 'The Good China' at the Electric Light Hotel on Sat 14 July... New management and booking label Twenty Twenty Music will be officially launching at The Gov on Fri 29 June and showcasing local bands Day On Fire, Quiet Child And Impartial with special guests Tulsa From The Borderland and Hinge from Melbourne. The whole shebang kicks off at 7.30pm... Day On Fire, incidentally, are on the lookout for a new drummer, since it seems their current one works too much and cannot keep up with the band's requirements. Perhaps that gig would be a good chance to introduce yourself?... Back in the days when Tumbleweed ruled the earth Wollongong was pretty much the stoner capital of the world. It must be something they grow there - now Wollongong introduce stoner masters Stone-Ox who are here for one show only extravaganza at the Southwark Hotel (Pt. Road, Thebarton). Joining them in on the action are locals Dead Popes Of The Vatican & The Meatbeaters, on Sat 7 July... with a great line in promoting themselves big time, Brisbane's Neurotransmitters are in Adelaide and performing at The Electric Light Hotel on Thurs 28 June with The Divide and Deepseaguns. Here, the Neurotransmitters take a bow.

Melbourne garage-soulsters 84 return to Adelaide on Sat 14 July to play the Crown and Anchor after blitzing audiences at this year's NXNE Music Conference in Toronto Canada. There they promoted their newly released lp, 'You, Me & Infamy', recorded late last year in Detroit; but now they're back home and getting serious on the road. They'll be joined by local garage-punk chickadees Ricochet Pete.

Adelaide's newest indie group The Warsaw Flowers play their debut show at The Grace Emily on Thurs 28 June, alongside acoustic duo The Kemp Brothers. Gearing up for their first appearance as a 4-piece band, the guys have just released their latest recordings and available both for download online at www.myspace.com/warsawflowers and as a limited CD giveaway to those attending on the night.

Rejusa, Happy Sometimes, & Nereeda play their 'Some Pale Green For Your Winter Blues' gig on Sat 7 July at the Jade Monkey... Something For Kate are likely to be busy for the rest of the year, having just released a retrospective double album entitled 'The Murmur Years', which, arguably, might contain their best material. They're likely to be playing somewhere at or near Fowler's Live on or very near Fri 14 Sept... Bobby Flynn, who seems to have made his mark on the national psyche through his exposure on 'Australian Idol', comes to the Gov on Tues 24 July. He has a new band, which incorporates members of his former band, the Omega 3.

& a quick round up of things from the woodshed... Straight To The Ace is gearing up for the launch of their brand new EP titled 'Hold Me Down'. Their launch gig is on Sat 7 July and is the culmination of months and months of hard work. Catch them at Jive, with Laura Hill and members of Special Patrol... Tidal hit the Enigma Bar on Sat 7 July with Stigmartyr and Shot In Paris... Sat 7 July, that's the very same night Mark Seymour plays The Gov...

The Rocketsmiths play at Jive Bar (With Foreshore, The Basics and Breakerfall) on Fri 13 July... Job For a Cowboy have announced their Australian tour Which will see them at Fowler's Live in Sept... Carus and The True Believers hit The Gov on Fri 6 July... Rocktherapy CDs & Records celebrate their 10th birthday with specials and deals until Sun 1 July... That's a perfect place to finish this off, so
