LCD Soundsystem
Sound Of Silver
DFA/Capitol/EMI
After their much hyped and successful debut self titled album, LCD Soundsystem returns with a much awaited sophomore release that continues to forge rock, dance, disco and electronic music - an unlikely combination that seems to work for them.
What captured many listeners with LCD's sound and ethos was their satirical, almost sarcastic, approach to their lyrics. The big hit and debut single from their debt album, Daft Punk Is Playing In My House is the epitome of such a vibe. And it is no surprise that certain aspects of 'Sound Of Silver' continue on this vein, with the album opener Get Innocous working its charm within many levels.
However, LCD is also an honest social commentator with their music; North American Scum is a reflective and humorous commentary on what it is really like to be an American in today's international society.
Time To Get Away and Us V Them are more of the dance floor friendly tracks of this album, with the trademark (and almost expected) cow bell sounds meshed within the funky beats and disco guitar riffs. However, I just feel that I appreciate the tracks even more if I ignore the Bowie/Byrne type vocals reverberating throughout the album.
They also return to their rock/punk roots with All My Friends and the sincere rock ballad of New York I Love You, which just highlight that they definitely can rip the dance floor as well as they can rock out the mosh pits.
LCD Soundsystem continue to stamp themselves as a successful rock/dance crossover which has seen the likes of Depeche Mode and New Order experience huge followings. 'Sound Of Silver' is a notable sophomore release which is sure to win over many more fans for them.
