The Human Abstract
Nocturne
Hopeless

Californian based quintet The Human Abstract have definitely proven why the word "Abstract" belongs in their name by unleashing a very strong record with 'Nocturne'. Featuring twelve very intense tracks of practically every genre of metal that exists and some of the most incredible musical and vocal changes I have ever witnessed I'm dumfounded why I've not heard anything about these incredibly talented Californians before.

Each track demands authority. With power metal inspired solos appearing frequently and ferociously, as well as hefty metalcore breakdowns adding the certain addictive angry 'punch' to the formula, one would think they have figured it all out already and maybe even assume too much. Then like a lightning strike, comes that which separates The Human Abstract from every other band out there; their classical music influence.

No, that was not a typing error. Each track at some point offers a possible 'interlude' with a siesta inspiring classical guitar part. Which even though sounds a little concerning, is actually quite likeable and almost a breath of fresh air into a very overdone area of music.

The vocals are also very strong on 'Nocturne'; the clean singing is very anthemic and easy to sing along to, whilst the heavier screaming parts are equally as impressive and provokes anger and energy even to the calmest individual. Stand out tracks include Mea Culpa, purely for the jaw-dropping solo at the end of the song. As well as Movement From Discord, this is for many reasons, but mostly the ever changing musical aspects of the song. Whether it's the brutal breakdowns, the sweet melodic chorus or even the 1980s hair metal inspired additional vocals from what sounds like a choir of women simply saying "woo", just incredible.

Overall a very impressive album, definitely a must have for fans of bands like: DragonForce, Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica and even God Forbid. Yes that's how diverse The Human Abstract can be. But also, to anyone who appreciates rock music, do not discard the idea of this CD because it's in the 'metal' genre. The talents displayed on 'Nocturne' is just so mind blowing that it may even impress grandparents.
