Sugar
Blacklung Theatre, Hindley St
Sat 24 March
until Sat 31 March
It is about a man. About a damned man who is going to die. It is set on a boat. It is set in the head of the man on the boat who is going to die. Co-written by 'Rubeville' playwright Thomas Henning and director Bojana Novakovic, 'Sugar' is a journey into the well known saying for those last moments "my life flashed before my eyes" except this time the life flashes in front of an audience.
Sugar, performed by the always energized Dylan Young, delves into his past as he sits on his boat in the middle of nowhere, eating sugar and waiting to die. His mind is a mix of memory, illusion and delusion as it tries to unwind what has happened to get him in such a situation. Among the chaos of Sugar's mind we meet, Clara, performed by Melissa Chambers. She is the cute little red head that giggles at Sugar's jokes and takes a nibble of the offered sugar, they obviously love each other. Together they try to untwine the turmoil of Sugar's past life, that lies hidden in an alcoholic haze, before he dies, along with the not always helpful narration from the man in the chair, played by Thomas Henning himself.
Of all the Blacklung offerings, 'Sugar' follows some of the conventions of theatre the closest. So if you have checked out the other shows and found them enjoyable but too confronting,I truly suggest giving 'Sugar' a go.
