Soft Sculpt
Pazzia Contemporary Performing Collective
The Fringe Factory
Thurs 15 March
Season closed
For three nights only the Pazzia contemporary performing collective are displaying what they have made in 'Soft Sculpt'. To the beautiful sounds of incredible new compositions of classical music, three artists sculpted on stage. This night's performance included a model maker and newspaper puppetry.
The music influencing the artists was performed by a string quartet to one side of the small stage. The compositions took you on a journey through such a variety of sound. One incredible moment was the sound of a swarm of seagulls bursting with life, another mention was a violin solo that took you into a dream. The quartet worked well together, feeding off of each other.
The newspaper puppetry took me a while to get into. At first, the rustle of the newspaper was just getting in the way of hearing the quieter moments of the music. After about half way through the performance I began to appreciate the characters that were evolving out of the paper. These characters ranged from bird to man to dragon, always morphing in and out of existence. The highlight to this section was when the dragon interrupted the model maker and she gave the dragon a tongue of red plasticine.
The final element to this display was the model maker. She was hard to see, even though she was being projected live onto the back wall. Her small objects looked like they could have been interesting but I wasn't sure what they where.
'Soft Sculpt' has two more performances, where I am led to believe that another lot of artists will be creating the same amazing composition.
