Break
Holden St Theatres
Tues 20 March
until Sun 25 March
Do you like sight gags, toilet humour and puns about bums? Well you may like this number. Break is the next technological level in the world of skit comedy. Ben Whimpey plays himself, a desperately lonely loser in search for his perfect imaginary fiancˇ. Through pre recorded and live performance he also plays his mother, father, brothers and sister (that's right, isn't it funny when men put on dresses?!). The search sends him to Adelaide where he meets Paul. I'm not exactly sure what Paul is supposed to be but he helps Ben to find his fiancˇ through a variety of send ups of television shows. Eventually he finds a wife from a send up of 'Perfect Match' who, to everyone's shock, leaves him the day of the wedding (but you can't guess who was wearing the wedding dress).
'Break' seems out of place for a venue like Holden Street Theatres who have such shows as the contemporary political performance 'What I Heard About Iraq' and 'Under Milk Wood' - back by popular demand.
Whimpey has done some clever tricks with his pre recordings, making it possible for him to portray the myriad of characters. The concept behind this technology is a fun idea but it starts to wear thin quickly.
Like I said, go check this out if you want to see the next version of skit comedy, still full of all those painfully funny moments.
