Adam Richard

Belgian Beer Cafe
Fri 16 March
until Sat 31 March

Knowing very little about Adam Richard, I was forewarned that he was quite funny and foul-mouthed. True, especially the latter.

Starting his show he offered us a five minute window to leave - with some chance of a refund - should any of us be offended by his openly gay mannerisms and the leanings of much of his material. I don't think anyone obliged.

Right from the get go he explained that after working on Sydney FM radio all week his swear gland was ready to burst and from thereon nothing was sacred... slagging A to C-grade celebrities alike, so many times he literally crossed the line from what may have seemed funny to think, to what could seriously be seen as slanderous to declare publicly, particularly when it came to a number of his Australian contemporaries.

And while the laughs kept on coming, I couldn't help but think I allowed myself to succumb to that 'shock jock' mentality no matter how crass some of his alleged statements were. Of course being a "foul-mouth poofter" (his words not mine), much of the rest of his show focused on gay icons, the love of camp theatre (now, 'Shapelle Corby - The Musical' is one I'd love to see too), and conveniently, the influx of hunky international cops and firemen about this weekend. Definitely not gay in the lame sense; but just like I was, you've now been warned.
