Puffio

It's hard to imagine what they're suggesting or about whom they're suggesting it, but the latest tongue-in-cheek production from the Adelaide Centre for the ARTS is 'ADDLOGOS: Are U Australia's Next Choreographic Tool?'. Taking a look at the wonderful world of corporate advertising and naming rights for reality TV dance events where the quality of the host's pearly white smile is much more important than the quality of the dance. Was it ever so? Find out in 'ADDLOGOS', running from Wed 28 to Sat 31 March in the main theatre at the Light Square complex.

Ahahahha, it's not very funny. Normally Puffio would completely ignore such trite rubbish, but given the hi-jinks which surround the Fringe the usually constrained and often implacable Puffio was struck by the following headline. "FATHER TED'S" ARDAL O'HANLON BLESSED BY ADELAIDE BOX OFFICE." it shouted. He's sold out his run of shows and added a new date to his Fringe performances. So there you have it, a play on words of the most trivial kind.

If you are swift, and swiftness is the key since the event in question is tonight, then the Phore Seasons Restaurant in Semaphore this very evening (Wed 21 March) is where you'll find Richie Robinson's acoustic jazz duo, celebrating the quieter and more contemplative side of the Fringe.

With exhibits coming from the Muse du Louvre in Paris, 'Journey To The Afterlife' is an exhibition of Egyptian antiquities, not seen before in Adelaide. After a season at the National Gallery in Canberra, more than 500 precious pieces and artefacts will be on display in the Art Gallery of SA from Wed 21 March. The exhibition is open until early July.

And a big hello around town to Christine Sweeney, the acting Director of the Media Resouce Centre, who has now taken up her position. She must have thought she'd landed in a fertile and artistically vibrant oasis, given what's been going on through March. Won't she learn, eh?

In other news around the town, former Adelaide Festival Centre Marketing Manager Alan Joyce has begun work in his new post as General Manager at the Feast Festival, who will celebrate their eleventh edition in November this year. An all new looking team takes on the colour and pageantry at the Feast office, with Joyce, Artistic Director Daniel Clarke and Admin Officer Kirsten Uhrig making up the team.

Ewan Cameron's exhibition of works is now open for viewing at the Brown Sugar Gallery in the city. From a quick look at the goodies it seems to be full of crazy cabaret potty humour, which may or may not be your bag.

On Sun 25 March the irrepressible Movin' Melvin Brown performs a special gig where 50% of the proceeds will go towards United Way SA and the rest to Melvin's 'Change This World' Project. The two organizations support similar agendas - to help people in low socio-economic circumstances - and Brown's is based in Austin Texas. The performance is at 1pm at Caos Cafe, Hindley St, city.

Herbie Hancock has announced that his April Adelaide Symphony Orchestra concerts will pay homage to the great George Gershwin. Along with his band, jazz great Hancock performs with the ASO on Fri 27 and Sat 28 April at 8.00pm in the Festival Theatre. George and Ira Gershwin are two of the twentieth century's foremost composers, who began writing their string of evergreen hits in the 1920s, song standards that are still recorded and performed to this day.

Purbayan Chatterjee is an Indian maestro of the sitar who has been playing the instrument since the age of four. Chatterjee performs 'Rasayana' at the Space on Tues 10 April. For this concert, he will perform with fellow musician Shashank, who accompanies him on flute, along with Tarlochan Singh on tabla. 'Rasayana' is a Sanskrit word meaning 'chemistry', which gives an indication of what you might expect when four of the world's finest exponents of Indian classical music collaborate.

A quick word about some visual arts exhibitions at and around the Festival Centre. 'Undercurrent' is on display in the Festival Centre foyer, being an exhibition of contemporary photo-media art highlighting the diverse and broad practices of ten South Australian photo-media artists. A somewhat different state of affairs is 'After Heysen', which closes on Sun 25 March, being a collection of works by Australian landscape artists. Paintings by Heysen from the Cedars' collection at Hahndorf are shown alongside works from the 2006 Heysen Prize for Australian Landscape with past winners acquired by the Hahndorf Academy. Meantime, in the Piano Bar is the 'SA Firefighters Hall Of Flame', utilising an appalling pun of which Puffio completely approves. Photographer Neil Jacobs has captured the vital physical fitness of firemen in this exhibition of images from the South Australian Fire Fighter's Calendars. And finally, 'Greek Kitch-en' in the Space Theatre Foyer is Sarah- Jane Cook and Niki Sperou's Australian-born Greek visual take on what they learned of Greek culture at their mothers' knee.

She gets around a bit, performing on stage with theatre groups, as a member of quartets and singing groups, a chorister and a soloist. All in the nicest possible way, of course... Emma Horwood will be performing at The Bundaleer Forest Weekend will be held on Sat 24 and Sun 25 March 2007 in the Bundaleer Forest, 10km south of Jamestown in South Australia's mid north. Also performing will be the most excellent Teddy Tahu Rhodes (a return visit), Simon O'Neill, vocal quartet Eve, the Goldner String Quartet, the ASO, and more.

ASO Concertmaster Terence Tam gets his moment in the spotlight when he marks his first year anniversary with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra by making his solo debut with the orchestra, performing Beethoven's much loved violin concerto. On Thurs 29, Fri 30 and Sat 31 March Tam will rock the walls of the Adelaide Town Hall in a program also featuring Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks and Haydn's Symphony No. 104, London.

Up and coming musical group CelestialDuo will be performing at Little Hampton Hall on Fri 23rd March at 7.30pm, in a programme featuring many styles of music, from medieval to modern, folk to jazz and even some of their own compositions.
