Best of the Fest Late Show
Governor Hindmarsh Hotel
Fri 9 March
until Sat 31 March
You know those nights that are ecstatically fun and funny because everything is just bizarre? This was one of them - a barrel of laughs from start to finish, with all the comedians absolutely on the ball with their improv skills. It also was nice to have surround sound comedy, with Micky D's mum providing laughs from the back.
So, Micky D has a spontaneous and amusing chat to his cousin on his friend's (or whomever's) mobile phone - and the night's off to a very relaxed and endearing start. Asher Treleaven had early some troubles, reading curious passages from second-hand books he'd picked up but soon got more than a few belly laughs with his Rock and Roll Eisteddfod dancing. The musical duo of Elbowskin had the funniest song dedicated to a future father-in-law, busting out a chorus of inappropriateness without being crude.
Maeve Higgins was my personal favourite of the night, she's a hilarious version of Lily Allen: totally street savvy, cool and irresistibly charismatic. Kent Valentine read the audience like a book, talking at a million miles and hour and pulling back out of cringe worthy jokes before we realised they were going bad. Stephen K Amos duelled with Micky D to close the night, their beat-box session nothing short of stupidly great.
The line-up for the 'Best Of The Fest Late Show' changes every night, and so really it's just a comedian lucky-dip. This is a great thing because you go without expectations, possibly a little intoxicated and ready for laughs due to the late timeslot. Worth a go if you want a comedic smorgasbord to spice up your night!
