Fiona O'Loughlin
Nova Cinema 2
Sat 10 March
Until Sat 31 March

If you're looking for an Australian touch and a South Australian bias (although she lives in Alice Springs), and you're fond of cynical mum humour, then Fiona O'Loughlin just might be your cup of tea. Even if you're not after such a niche, O'Loughlin's eccentric household humour is universal enough for all to appreciate. Her meandering, imploring anecdotes ("I swear this is exactly what he said...!"), give you space to visualise her dysfunctional dwelling, and be constantly entertained, if not having a good laugh.

Playing off how bad a mum and wife she is, O'Loughlin is queen of taking the piss from the mundane routine at home. "I don't see the point of doing household choirs between 9 and 4 - there's no audience to appreciate it" cries O'Loughlin in her controlled melodramatic stage persona. There's no letting up with jokes about her kids, for whom names are not as important as labels such as 'the evil one', 'the favourite' and 'the thick one'.

O'Loughlin creates a nice comfy world in her act where both herself and the audience feel relaxed and at home. Slagging off her children, her husband, her friends and of course herself, it's finding the funny side of the insecurities and absolute frustrations of living with the same people for a good portion of life. Although providing some big laughs, tonight was an entertaining, yet short, forty minute show where nothing was left wanting, but nothing was too die for either.
