Best Of The Edinburgh Fest
Governor Hindmarsh Hotel
Wed 7 March
Until Sun 1 April
The best way to see a comedy show is to go in expecting not to laugh. You have to make the comedian work for it. Except Stephen K Amos, star of 'Best Of The Edinburgh Fest', doesn't have to. He could have you roaring with laughter at your mother's funeral.
But more of him later. The show is MC-ed by Asher Treleaven. He's mildly amusing when he's just talking to the audience, but when he does his bits - notably talking us through his erotic book collection and doing something with a pair of forks that has to be seen to be believed - he is nothing short of hilarious. The first act is Irish comedian Maeve Higgins, who has some good material but whose delivery needs a little work.
But Amos is the star of the show. Appearing first as a visiting Nigerian prince with a barely pronounceable name, he makes fun of the audience through an interpreter (an uncredited young man who delivers perfectly), before revealing he can speak English and then making fun of the audience as individuals. Through this character Amos reveals he knows enough about Australia to hit some strong bullseyes, and the role allows him to build a very special rapport with his audience. ("It's a joke! Tell your face.")
After that, he comes back as himself, and the onslaught begins again. Amos barely needs material; he just stands on the stage as himself, and the laughs come roaring out. A fluke encounter with an audience member responsible for a commercial Amos has been lampooning for about a year was probably a once off event, but never mind. See any Stephen K Amos show you can. You will not be disappointed.
