Dave Callan
Dance Of The Flame Retardant Monkey
Sun 11 March
until Sat 31 March

Oh dear. Tonight was a flop. Essentially, Dave Callan wasn't funny. I'd never witnessed a flop before, and let me tell you - there were funny moments, but they did not make up for periods of boredom and, for example, not a single laugh for Callan's epilogue. We clapped nervously, I for one applauding that the man didn't apologise: that would've been rock bottom.

So what went wrong? Well, Callan bombarded us with bits and pieces of information: facts, photos, and a crazy interweaving narrative that saw us witness Dave selling his soul to the Microsoft Word 'paperclip devil' ("I see you're trying to perform a comedy show?"), taking part in a self-realisation game-show, and crap on in all sorts of crazy directions. The random craziness however, indeed the whole show, was scripted.

Dave Callan conversed, through his slideshow presentation, with characters he'd pre-recorded, and they weren't funny. The 'robot' which sounded exactly like the type-and-speak plugin I have with a certain on "messenger" program on my computer, was way overused, and spoke frustratingly slowly for extremely long passages. The information and photos presented would better presented in a blog, or chain email than in a comedy presentation.

Finally, Callan proved he was a nice guy with his preaching about making the world a better place - but that was funny in what way? The audience had come to have a laugh, and if they'd had a laugh along the way of being enlightened, well that would've been a different story. This show needs a complete overhaul.
