Best of Adelaide Comedy
Rhino Room
Wed 7 March
Until Sat 31 March

The Rhino Room is known as Adelaide's place for comedy all year round, and it's even more so when the Fringe is on. They have plenty on this year, including Late Nite Comedy, individual acts and special two-for-one deals throughout (see a show for details). And there's 'Best Of Adelaide Comedy', an hour of local comedy featuring four stand-ups plus one "legend spot" featuring some of our cities best known comics.

There's a roster of eight comedians, so who you see depends on when you go. At my showing they were Craig Egan, Jarrod Fitch, Hannah Gadsby, and Scott John. With about twenty minutes or so each, and Egan MC-ing in between, there's not much time for the performers to build on a theme; it's more a case of firing jokes off quickly and moving right along whether they hit their mark or not. It's a format that highlights the difference between the good and the average comedian.

In this case, I'd say most of them fell into the average category. Egan, in particular, has never struck me as particularly funny, but he's experienced enough to keep the pace up. I got one or two chuckles from the others, but no belly laughs. The exception was Hannah Gadsby, whose deadpan delivery and self-deprecating material hit the mark perfectly. As for the supposed legend, I'd never heard of him before and I don't think I've been missing anything.

But the rest of the crowd (and one member in particular) seemed to be enjoying themselves and with a show like this there'll be a different vibe each time. It's a cheap night out and early enough to do something after, and it's running throughout the month. If nothing else, you'll be supporting the locals.
