My interest kind of piqued with this side project of Żystein G Brun and Mr V. (a.k.a. Vintersorg), both best known for their main band, Borknagar. Apparently the group first materialised out of the two members' love for movie soundtracks and this is certainly evidenced in their music. Of course, we still get to hear screeched vocals and double bass drumming, no doubt to appeal to fans of the above mentioned members' main band, but there are also equal amounts of atmospheric keyboards, spoken parts and clean vocals. Personally, I would have to say that Vintersorg's vocals here are in fact the highlight of 'Terra' and a far improvement than his work with Borknagar.
'Terra' could almost be seen as a concept album with almost every song being sung about, um, snow and ice, which is also reflected in the album cover. Yes, 'exciting stuff', I hear you say.
Though the songs might sound okay, will anyone really remember this in five or ten years? 'Terra' is in fact probably an album that you will play once or twice then leave in your CD collection only to forget all about it six months later. Okay, so most side projects never do live up to the composers' main band, but surely, one would have expected more from a band that has existed for over five years. Having said all that, this should still appeal to fans of Borknagar and Solefald.
