Gimme Some More: Mixed And Cut Up By Nick Toth

Jam/Shock

Nick Toth is a familiar figure in the Australian hip-hop scene. A former member of the seminal Australian hip-hop group MetaBass'n'Breath, he has not only raised his profile within the genre, but has also been an endearing advocate for its development in the Australian music culture by producing, DJ-ing, radio broadcasting, as well as running numerous DJ courses and competitions. And four years after becoming one of the first Australian DJs (along with Nino Brown) to be signed for a commercially released hip-hop mix-tape ('Blazin' series), Toth has released another compilation filled with some of the best funked-up hip-hop going around.

I know, I know, "Not another hip-hop mix-tape!" I can hear you all exclaim with curtailed enthusiasm. And I agree. Mix-tapes have become somewhat of a recent trend in hip-hop music, resulting in our exposure to the best, and not so best, of mix-tapes. But 'Gimme Some More' is a whole different affair. Gone are the at times annoyingly inappropriate, seemingly obligatory throngs of DJ shout-outs in the middle of the mixes, as well as the same old cuts that every urban DJ and commercial radio and clubs play.

Instead Toth delivers a two-CD delight, cutting up tracks from hip-hop luminaries such as Pete Rock, Talib Kweli, Blackalicious, Giant Panda, Lyrics Born, Digable Planets, Slum Village, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Aceyalone, Supernatural, and Breakestra. And of course, one would expect Toth to include some of his own production, with Mr. Lif's For You closing CD one.

However, Australian hip-hop fans may be disappointed with the lack of considerable Aussie representation in this compilation, with Resin Dogs, featuring Mystro, Hau and Abstract Rude, being the sole representatives. This is a shame, considering the status of Toth within the industry, as well as the compilation stating in its opener that this is a mix-tape from Australia.

Nonetheless, this is a great mix of funk-laced hip-hop, filled with artists that make the genre great. Mixed and cut beautifully by Toth, it is a refreshing compilation release that just lets the DJ do the spinning and the music do the talking.
