Tim Steward
How Does It End

Reverberation

If ever there was an album released by an artist for the sake of their own personal musical expression, 'How Does It End' is it. That's not to suggest that this album is self-indulgent and worthless. In reality it was never going to shift many units, instead this is the place of personal expression that Tim Steward was always bound to reach.

He originally came to prominence as singer/guitarist of the three-piece alternative rock band Screamfeeder, then last year he and drummer Dean Shwereb banged out a two-piece punk rock record under the moniker The Whats. So now here is Steward alone and here are the songs he wrote and recorded between 2001 and 2004. The only way for these songs to see the light of day was for Steward to release them as a separate entity.

The opening track states that "Now I feel like I'm landing on alien turf," which seems so apt for this pleasant, ambient song which just floats along in a way that is so foreign to his previous bands. Similarly, Law For Yourself is a kooky electro-based song with dance-y beats, voice effects and keyboard sounds that see Steward exploring unfamiliar territory. The downcast melody of Remember What Came First and the vibe of sweet sadness, complete with backing vocals, sounds closer to The Clouds than Screamfeeder. The Sun Is Beginning To Rise opens with Steward singing, accompanied only by a quiet acoustic guitar, and allows the weakness of Steward's voice to be heard.

Lyrically, there are moments that contain clichˇs, but the flaw of this album is summed up in the cool indie-pop of Not The Same; "I know that I'm running, but I don't know what I'm running towards."

Steward experiments on this album with all sorts of sounds, rhythms, instruments and lyrics that are atypical of Screamfeeder and The Whats. However, as interesting and likeable as some of these songs are, 'How Does It End' is not even a 'just for the fans' album - in reality, it's a personal album that Steward needed to make.
