T'N'T
My Better Half
Universal
Two of the wild men of Australian rock'n'roll, Tim Rogers and Tex Perkins, unite on original material for the first time. Featuring front verandah acoustic guitars at ten paces, 'My Better Half' is pretty much what you might expect from these two rock'n'roll outlaws with hearts of gold.
Their rock doggie personas are represented by playful 12 bar blues (Everybody Hates You When You're Popular), a Bob Seger-like road confessional (Semi Auto-Duo-Bio), irreverent covers of Loverboy, Kiss and Rod Stewart, a faithful reading of Kim Salmon's Fire Escape and a hidden 14th track, Cunnilingus, through which these two grown men giggle like naughty schoolboys.
Yet for all the highs that rock'n'roll offers, Rogers and Perkins also know a thing or two about doing it hard and it's their tales of loss and regret that most resonate. Two of Rogers' ballads are among the most tender things he has ever done. They're also surely personal: You Should See Her Now might be a brave-faced response to seeing his ex-wife ("If you thought that she was beautiful, well, you should see her now...even though it kills you, spare a minute to feel proud'), while on Dinosaurs, he articulates the hurt and confusion of not being able to see his young daughter enough.
Perkins' Half Of Nothing, meanwhile, is both self-mockingly sincere ("I who have nothing will give half to you..."), and funny ("Wanna start a family with you, just like Charles Manson"). It captures the mood of this disc perfectly.
