Puff'n'Stuff
They came to blow you away (not to mention totally weird you out) last June for their Uprising Of The Robots tour at the Jade Monkey, and now, quite possibly one of the most eclectic bands around at the moment, The Red Paintings, are back on Sat 5 August at Fowler's Live. The band's EP has been getting such positive feedbacks nationally that the band have decided to not only return in August, but to also make their way back once again in the near future to complete a trilogy of shows! Bring on the robots!
No robots, true, but Most Precious Blood, Her Nightmare, Cry Murder and Bloodsport are playing at the Enigma Bar on Fri 21 July, as are Sumi, Move To Strike, City On Fire, 919 and The City Riots at Fowler's Live. You can also catch Loemax play a show with Poly And The Statics and Double Handed all on the same night at the Jade Monkey.
Gary Burrows, mild mannered APRA rep in our fair state, is also a rustler, or at least he heads up a bunch. Sunday July 30 sees Gary And The Rustlers launch their full length CD at the Cavern. And if you think it sounds country, well it walks talks and quacks, so waddya reckon?
Local heavyweights Fighterpilot are celebrating their 5th birthday at Jive on Fri 21 July. Foreshore and Miracle Hat are invited and so are you - there will be CD and merch give-aways, as well as some brand new tunes from Fighterpilot's upcoming debut.
A couple of unmissable shows are coming up at the Adelaide Uni Bar too - Gyroscope will be bringing down the house on Sat 22 July for an all-ages show, as well as on Sun 23 July for the over-18s with New Zealand's The Bleeders and The Critics.
Western Australia's singer-songwriter Carus Thompson is heading over to Adelaide to play a solo acoustic show at the Grace Emily on Tue 25 July and Wed 26 July along with Queensland's singer-songwriter Loren for a highly-anticipated show, from what Puff hears. The two will play a solo set each, then team up to treat the punters with some special duo action.
The Beautiful Girls are going to be making a double appearance at the Governor Hindmarsh on Thurs 27 July and Fri 28 July along with special guests The Fumes.
Playing two shows out the front of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra on Thurs 27 July and Fri 28 July will be The Scholars with special guests Little Ice Age, who will be performing new arrangements of alternative songs by bands like Muse, The Flaming Lips, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead. Puff has been told there will even be a special appearance by the very busy Leigh Stardust.
Ground Components have a new album as well as tour coming up on Thurs 27 July at the Rocket Bar, which will see the guys launch their newbie with the help of mates the Central Deli Band and Straight To Video.
Fri 28 July is going to be one massive night of rock too at Fowler's Live - Liability Of My Own, as well as The Valley, Nazarite Vow, Her Latest Flame, With Dying Words and Sector 7G are playing, while locals Mirrorline are also making a comeback at the Jade Monkey on the said night with some very special guests Meanwell College and TommyGun.
Likewise, make sure to check out The Arctic Monkeys play with The Grates on Tue 1 August at Thebarton Theatre.
In fact, if you thought the last couple of months were somewhat quiet in terms of gigs, well, you're in for a treat come this August - trust Puff!
Par example, Youthgroup are just one among the heavyweights that will be heading over to Adelaide next month, playing a show with singer-songwriters Darren Hanlon and Don Lennon from the U.S. on Sat 12 August at the Governor Hindmarsh. Amongst others will be Aviator Lane, who will be playing at the Jade Monkey with Deloris and Piching Woo. After recently supporting Low and having just released their self-titled EP in New South Wales, Aviator Lane will be bringing their unique, hushed tunes to Adelaide on Fri 4 August.
The Silvermine Tapes are getting set to play their one and only Adelaide show for the rest of this year on Thurs 3 August due to seven members being spread across three different states. Their shows are few and far between, so make sure to catch them while you can at the Jade Monkey with support from Little Ice Age and Frontiers In Photography.
Meanwhile, Fri 11 August sees The Legends Of Motorsport firing up the Crown And Anchor Hotel with Kamikaze Trio and BugGirl in support of their new single Mess It Up from the forthcoming album 'Remnants From The Big Bang'.
Sydney noise-storm The Valentinos, meanwhile, are kicking off their aptly named Damn And Damn Again tour with the UK's Johnny Boy at the Rocket Bar on Sat 26 August. Currently being sued by an American band of the same name, it's looking more than likely this may be one of the last times you'll catch The Valentinos so named.
Puff is also pleased to announce two massive upcoming tours - the first being the Boomtown Showdown tour on Fri 18 August at the Enigma Bar, which will see Angelas Dish and The Gataway Plan as headliners. This will be the first ever full-blown Boomtown national tour and will feature showcase performances from other Boomtown Records artists as well.
Meanwhile, the Rampage Tour will see Carpathian, 50 Lions and Break Even join forces on Fri 25 August at Fowler's Live.
See? Puff is all about giving.
In news from the other side of the big round ball, there's releases a-plenty from some pretty big names - Tori Amos being one. The singer will soon be releasing a five-disc box set of her greatest hits as well as B-sides which will also come with extensive liner notes written by Amos herself.
Johnny Cash, meanwhile, may be dead and gone, but his music most certainly isn't! 'American V: A Hundred Highways' has sold 88,000 copies in the United States alone, according to Nielsen Soundscan, which means this is the deceased legend's first number one album since 1969's 'Johnny Cash At San Quentin'. In the process, Cash has managed to knock The Dixie Chicks' 'Taking The Long Way' down to number two after seven weeks on top of the Billboard 200 charts.
The Killers are also back and ready to unleash their follow up to 2004's smash hit 'Hot Fuss' which was recorded and produced in the band's home town of Las Vegas. While the first single off the album will be out in September, the band have no plans to release the new record 'Sam's Town' before mid-October.
Trying their hand at acting are The Rolling Stones' guitarist and human headline Keith Richards, and shock-rocker Marilyn Manson. While Manson has dabbled in film before, this time he is said to be directing as well as staring in a feature named 'Phantasmagoria: The Visions Of Lewis Carroll', which will quite possibly see good friend Johnny Depp making an appearance. Richards, meanwhile, is lined up to play Captain Jack Sparrow's swashbuckling father, according to Depp, in the third instalment of 'The Pirates of The Caribbean' series.
It may all seem exciting and glamorous in the exotic world of rockstars/filmstars, but Puff knows (as taught by Dorothy, who also eschews that crazy world of celebrity fun and frolic), there's no place like home. Just click your heels... you know the drill. There's plenty to do, see and hear in our dear little burgh...
Get Out Of The House!
