Metal News.
The next instalment of monthly metal event The War Room, will be something of a grindcore extravaganza on Fri 26 May, with Melbourne grind bands The Day Everything Became Nothing and Fuck I'm Dead sharing the stage at the Enigma Bar with local exponents of the genre, Meat Wallet and Guantanamo Bay City Rollers with fellow locals Los Diablos completing the bill.
On the same night, there will be a show at the new Lizard Lounge (the Night Train complex on Light Square) featuring Pumpernickel, Dead Hours, Incarnadine, Century and The Creeps. The first band takes the stage at 9 PM, and beer will be sold at happy hour prices all night.
After a rather lengthy period of dormancy, local Anzac-themed death metal band Slaughter Thou will make a return to the live scene on Fri 9 June at Incineration 2, an all-ages metal event being held at Fowler's Live. Also playing on the night will be Sarsekim, Beyond Mortal Dreams and Obsidian Aspect, and doors open at 7:30pm. The first Incineration show was a huge event, so be sure not to miss this one!
During the Queen's Birthday long weekend (Sat 10 June to Mon 12 June), the Adelaide Showgrounds will be playing host to the latest Giant CD, DVD, Record, Comic and Book Sale. In addition to the aforementioned items, cassettes, sheet music, concert T-shirts, music memorabilia and posters will also be on sale, so there're sure to be a lot of things in among all that to appeal to the average metalhead. The event runs from 10 AM to 5 PM each day, and a small entry fee applies; if you can find some kids under 12 to go with you, though (and don't think you'd look too suss with them in your company), they'll get in for free. If you'd be interested in selling merchandise at the event, go to www.giantmusicsales.com, or e-mail the organisers care of cdfairs@internode.on.net.
It's been a bit of a slow fortnight as far as metal news goes, so to stop this column from looking too anorexic, here's another bit of offbeat metal-related news from... Turkmenistan! No, actually, the USA again (seriously, does nothing wild and wacky happen in the realms of metal anywhere else?). For the second consecutive year Liam Wilson, bass player for The Dillinger Escape Plan, has been nominated for animal rights group PETA2's 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian' Poll. This has not been Wilson's only association with the organisation; earlier in the year, he appeared in a US nationwide print advertising campaign it ran in order to promote vegetarianism.
Finally, a word about deadlines. In the past, I've been sent news that unfortunately did not make it into the column as it arrived too late for me to use. Generally, I'm not that strict about deadlines, but if you've got something that really has to appear in the next issue's news column, get it to me by the Wednesday before that issue comes out (ie a week before). If you send it later, it may still make it, but I can't offer any guarantees (particularly as my long-unreliable home internet connection has finally died altogether; while I'm getting around to replacing it, I'm having to come into the office to sort through my e-mails). Anytime after about midday on Friday is definitely too late.
