And so, in the aftermath of the Festival and the Fringe, and WOMADelaide, and as Adelaide settles into the gentle torpor of another beautiful autumn, as the days grow shorter and grey clouds gather upon the horizon, the talk within the arts community turns to consideration of the latest edict from Premier Mike... that Adelaide should revise its schedule and have an annual Fringe Festival. Naturally, as happens in Adelaide, the debate is joined once the decision has been made (by someone other than those best placed to make it, usually) and so the behind-the-scenes arguments rage. More on that as the gossip bubbles to the surface.

What is certain is that the Fringe will go forward without talented CEO Gail Carnes, who has resigned due to family illness. The fact that her imminent departure was being discussed by Fringe board members quite openly some weeks ago (without mention of family illness) means this news is not unexpected. Apparently her father has since passed away, and Puffio wishes Carnes and her family the very best for the future.

Congratulations are due to dB Magazine theatre reviewer David Grybowski who married environmental architect Lizzy Vines several weekends ago in a delightful (and sweltering) ceremony at St Judes, Port Elliot. No doubt he was pleased: a full house, an appreciative audience, great performances all round (well played vicar!!) and a smashing opening night party afterwards back at the happy couple's Middleton retreat, where Puffio spotted playwright Stephen House, dB Magazine publisher Arna Eyers-White, and Tourism Minister Jane Lomax-Smith amongst the well wishers.

'The Journey Of Continuing Space' is a collection of new works by three South Australian women artists (Esha Xavier Quinn, Rebecca Arman and Wendy Rushby) which is being exhibited now at the Two Pike Gallery & Studio on Goodwood Road. The three artists collaborated to present this collection in which they explore 'a continuum of evolution and experiences'.

Coming up after the runaway success of their Festival Show 'Honk If You Are Jesus', State Theatre leap out with their next effort, presenting a Stewart D'Arrietta production which features Jacki Weaver in a one-woman show. Robert Hewett's 'The Blonde, The Brunette & The Vengeful Redhead' opens on Fri 12 May in the Playhouse.

And in other Fringe and Festival related news, Matt Byrne takes his 'Pricks' to Holden Street Theatres, which, due to its enormous popularity, has had its season extended. Yep, the medical comedy about the ailing Modbury Hope Hospital which Byrne calls a "Four Star Fringe sellout smash hit" can be found performing at The Studio at Holden Street Theatres for one week from Thurs 20 April.

They who are coordinating the 'My Happiness Exhibition', Onya Soapbox, invite all artists of any description to donate an item for auction to raise money for young people with mental health problems. The auction will be held at the Tin Cat Cafˇ on Sun 18 June, but the time to act is now! Proceeds from the auction are going to Headroom (www.headroom.net.au) an important mental health project that engages young people to think about and develop an understanding of their own mental health. To be involved, contact Rachel Costar on rachel@onyasoapbox.com or 8227 0616.

If the idea of manipulating your glove puppets into bizarre shapes appeals to you; if you thrill to the idea of seeing grown men playing with their turkey giblets; if laughing and wincing at immature todger twiddlers is your bag; if seeing their bags being bulged into vaguely suggestive shapes then you really do need to get out more often. In fact, take a night out to attend 'The Puppetry Of The Penis', which can be found at Her Majesty's Theatre from Thurs 4 May. Initially conceived by Simon Morley as the title of a highbrow art calendar showcasing twelve of his favorite penis installations, it has toured the world, inspired spinoff shows and been franchised as a going concern. Which just goes to show that since 1998 young men have spent far too much time concentrating on their bollocks.

If you move very swiftly indeed you still have a chance of catching one of the two remaining shows of the very delightful musical 'The Night They Invented Champagne' at an Out of the Square venue near you. Adelaide favourites Patrick Lim and Eleanor Blythman have teamed up for an array of romantic duets, comic duets and show stoppers, featuring songs from great song writers such as Cole Porter, Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Rogers & Hammerstein, Sondheim and so on. In any event, you'll catch 'The Night They Invented Champagne' at The Arts Centre Port Noarlunga on Wed 12, and the Golden Grove Arts Centre on Thurs 13 April.

A little something to while away the time over Easter? The Art Gallery of South Australia will be open from 10am to 5pm every day over the holiday weekend with a number of special free events for people of all ages to enjoy. The '2006 Adelaide Biennial Of Australian Art: 21st Century Modern' is on show, and guided tours are available. On Good Friday you can spend a morning or afternoon with Bishop Ian George (11am & 2pm) as he leads his Easter tours through the Gallery speaking about key religious and spiritual works in the collection, accompanied by the wonderful and uplifting voices of the Corinthian Singers. Tours leave from North Terrace entrance on Fri 14 April and are free. On Holy Saturday think about and comment on selected works of art that resonate with the message of Easter with Father Anthony Kain whose free tour departs from the North Terrace entrance on Sat 15 April at 11am. For children there's the 'Children's Easter Trail': the Easter Bunny and Bilby have been in to the Gallery to look at how Easter can be celebrated through art. Families can hop along to the North Terrace entrance to pick up their free self-guided Easter trail and follow the Easter egg signs to locate egg-citing works of art. Trails are available Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from10am to 5 pm.

'Henry Hoke's Guide To The Misguided' really does sound like an interesting exhibition, currently on display at The Bay Discovery Centre at Glenelg. It's a fascinating enquiry into one of Australia's great unsung backyard inventors: Henry Hoke. Hoke is not a household name in this country - but he should be according to curator Mark Thomson, author of 'Blokes & Sheds' and 'Rare Trades'. "When Henry passed away recently, he left behind a shed full of baffling and enigmatic objects or the packages they may have come in," says Mr Thomson, who is the Advanced Research Director at the slightly prestigious Australasian Institute of Backyard Studies. "... all we have of Hoke's Smoke Hammer, for instance, is a cardboard box and a few instructions. The hammer itself appears to have floated away. His celebrated packets of Spark Plug Sparks are of course useless if opened in normal light. Luckily we still have one of his Tuning Pipes for a Ship's Foghorn, several of his glass hammers and quite a few packets of rubber screws and pointless nails."

An exhibition of recent paintings by Leith Semmens is 'The Red Seal Collection', although whether this title refers to pinnipeds or wax emblems is yet to be determined by the somewhat deficient Puffio. A clue might be held by the fact that Semmen's exhibition can be found at the Two Pike Gallery & Studio, Goodwood, his paintings reflecting his keen observations of the detail of urban life, buildings, public spaces and of Australian Flora and Fauna.

'Air Adelaide 2005/06' is a tobacco awareness project on display at the Axis Gallery now. 'Air Adelaide 2005-06' is an action based, tobacco control project and exhibition targeting newly arrived migrant and refugee communities from Africa, the Middle East and the former Yugoslavia. The project suggests people give up smoking because it's bad for them. Actually, the press release contained many more words of three and four syllables, but that's the gist of it. The aim is to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco use through many mediums, including an interactive 'FLASH' Macromedia show and an anti tobacco hip hop song.

An exhibition of forty five rarely seen works by leading 19th century topographical artist George French Angas, entitled 'George French Angas: South Australia Illustrated' is on show now at Carrick Hill. Curated by the Art Gallery of South Australia's Rebecca Andrews, the exhibition features beautiful watercolours and lithographs by George French Angas from the Art Gallery's collection. These are some of the first European depictions of regional South Australia, including the Coorong, Angaston, and the Barossa Valley, the indigenous people of the regions, their tools and implements as well as local flora and fauna and the settler's dwellings. Following the Adelaide season at Carrick Hill the exhibition will tour to Port Lincoln (21 July - 3 Sept), Port Pirie (9 Sept - 22 Oct), Tanunda (26 Oct - 3 Dec) and Mount Gambier (9 Dec - 11 Feb 2007).

1. The Premier Art Gallery (Rundle Street, city) currently hosts 'In Search Of Light', the first exhibition as a group for artists Amalia Alpareanu, Mihaela Cheva, Simina Comanescu, Dorina Michas and Magda Vacariu. All five artists were born in Romania and are now based in Adelaide, and met in 2005 when they worked on a community cultural project. They now plan to hold a series of group exhibitions as the 'Romanian Group'.

2. 'A Place In The World' is a visual art prize exhibition currently (but only for the next few days) at Bonython Hall western aisle (enter via western door), at Adelaide University. This exhibition is part of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Conference at the University of Adelaide, and its aim is to offer an opportunity for tertiary student artists from Conference host countries, Australia and New Zealand, to create a work of art which reflects the personal or cultural complexities of life in their communities. Thirty-one works represent artists from nineteen Australian universities.

3. Adelaide Central gallery2 (at Osmond Terrace, Norwood), is currently showing 'Beyond 2D', an exhibition which builds upon Gallery2's traditional Indoor/Outdoor sculpture exhibition. The artists included in this exhibition work across a wide variety of media, from more traditional bronze and terracotta, through to glass, found objects and installation style works.

4. Splash Theatre presents 'The King's New Suit', a new version of Hans Christian Anderson's classic story 'The Emperor's New Clothes' at the Promethean Theatre from Tues 19 April. Flush with the success of their season in the Adelaide Fringe and subsequent tour to Victorian Arts Centres, Splash Theatre's production of 'The King's New Suit' returns to Adelaide for three days for a school holiday season.

5. The Fall Of Light' is an exhibition of recent paintings by Stephanie Crase, which is currently open for inspection at Art Images Gallery on the Parade.

6. 'Multifarious' is an exhibition of works in clay by Jane Burbidge, to be displayed at the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery until Fri 28 April. There looks to be some lovely vases and the like in her work...

7. Sam Barratt and Chris Edser have teamed up to have their own exhibition - at the South Australian School of Art's gallery (conveniently located next to the Worldsend Hotel on Hindley St).

8. 'Some Sex And A Cup Of Tea' boasts that it is "an exploration of traditional needlework... with a twist! " One hopes so!! Get amongst it at the Urban Cow Studio on Frome Street, city, where recent South Australian School of Art Honours Graduate Gina Leonello presents her first solo exhibition. Puffio saw her rather wonderful embroidered works at the recent Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition, and can heartily endorse their charms.
